it is also really hard to spot unless you pay close attention, my brother told me about it when the lakers were playing the kings and I did’nt notice it until game 3 of the portland series…
He is wearing it to promote sexual abstinence among unmarried people. Yes, AC Green is unmarried and openly a virgin.
I have yet to figure out how wearing a bear on your head promotes abstinence other than having all of the women laugh at you and turn down your requests for some quality one on one time.
Yeah, the bear is a symbol of abstinence. AC Green and Arsenio Hall did a video roughly 10 years ago about how safe sex is important, that you should wait, etc. And I do believe that the bear was used as the video’s mascot.
That would make him basically the only one in the NBA.

Magic Johnson, shall we say, had some “Wilt Chamberlain like” tendencies (What is it about the Lakers, anyway?). As a Lakers fan, I really liked Magic as a player but lost a lot of respect for him, when, in the press conference where he had announced that he had contracted the HIV virus, he claimed it was because he had (get ready to gag, ladies) “accomodated” all those women. He didn’t quite say that he didn’t enjoy sex, he just didn’t want to hurt those poor women’s feelings, but even so… (One wonders, by the way, whether he was as accomodating to the unattractive females as well.)
Some of you basketball fans may remember when James Worthy got caught soliciting a hooker WHILE HIS WIFE WAS PREGNANT, which struck me as really despicable. Well, I have no way of knowing if this is true, but someone I know swears that Worthy was covering up for Magic.
Re Sledman’s comment about Green being the only virgin in the NBA–how many bastard children does Shawn Kemp have again?? :eek:
Beleive me, I know all about Magic Johnson and how he contracted HIV. My point was that Sledman seemed to be implying that Green would somehow find it tough to choose celibacy after seeing the results of Johnson’s philandering. I would think just the opposite to be true; nothing like seeing something with your own eyes to make you a believer.
and I agree with you that seeing the results of Magic’s philandering would tend to reinforce Green’s celibacy.
However, Green certainly must have had several opportunities to “shed his abstinence”, as it were, long before Magic contracted HIV. Certainly what he witnessed might have reinforced his beliefs, but it’s pretty darn clear he already had them.
I’m surprised that since Green is obviously making a public statement of some sort, that he hasn’t chosen to publicize this more widely. I didn’t know of this bear thing until reading the OP.

I believe that AC Green may even have been with another team at the point that the Magic Man announced he had contracted HIV. AC Green has done a good job of sticking to his guns so to speak. The temptation and opportunnities were/are inevitably there. That takes inner strength and the courage of your convictions.
Now you too can not get laid, just like A.C. (abstinence committed) Green!
IIRC Barry Sanders is (or at least was up until a couple of years ago when I read an article on Green Sanders) also a virgin.
