What is that string worn on the forehead by some hispanic guys?

Apologies in advance if I have some of the terminology wrong, but I sometimes see, in US movies, Hispanic gang-type guys wearing a string over their forehead in a way that comes to an apex at the center top of the forehead (at the hairline) and extends away at both sides down towards the temples.

What is that? What cultural or other significance does it have? Thanks.

Hairnet

Ahh, that’s it. Thanks!

Is it for fashion? It appears to hold that guy’s (link above) hair perfectly in place so that would be my guess as to it’s purpose.

As compared to the other need for a hairnet; to keep falling hairs out of your food, work, etc.

Apparently it can be part of a gang uniform (if you trust the LAPD on this - right at the bottom -although that sentence is ambiguous as to whether it’s just “females” that wear them - but the wiki article on “cholos” seems to indicate men)

When I was in high school, a lot of hispanic gangs wore them. The males wore them more often than the females wore them.

Shaved heads have been popular in recent years, so I haven’t seen them in a while. Then again, LAPD deals with a much larger population than I see.

In my day we wore paisley bandanas.

Well cholo is the masculine form while chola is the feminine. The chola style I see around here is this ridiculous over the top clown-like penciled in eyebrows over completely plucked eyebrows. I guess it’s a lot less extreme than face tats or radical piercings, but it really freaks me out.

I can’t even find a properly representative google image, but god damn, it makes Divine look prim.

You wanna see something REALLY over the top, how about a woman who didn’t have time to finish the plucking, and she went out in public with four eyebrows?

Ick.
