What is the best credit card to get?

I want a low apr and no annual fee. Any advise?

O and miles would be a plus.

Visa.

Visa.com

Has lots of protections & other stuff…

Get yourself a debit card. Really.

Visa has them - they do everything a credit card does except put you in debt.

check into banks in Arkansas. They have a state law that says they cannot charge more than a small percentage over the prime rate. So you get a good rate, not just for an introductory period. They will be very short on other services though.

DAD’S!

Ock, I kill me!

Arkansas banks tend to make up for the usury thing, though, by charging an annual fee.

Do you belong to a credit union? Check into that card.

This one: Citgo Preferred Visa. 1% cashback on all purchases, paid monthly against the current month’s balance. Online account access. My APR is a bit high, 16%, though it doesn’t matter to me. Financial backing is Citibank.

visa lets you put just about any photo you want on your card. Yep, no longer does it just have to be your face, but you can put a picture of your family, toys, etc. Cost? Free first time $4.95 after that. No, you can’t put a picture of Blue on it or drugs etc.

I second the notion of going to a credit union. They are much better than banks generally speaking.

Since you seem not to have a credit card now, you don’t have debt. Since you are asking about low apr, it would seem you are contemplating credit card debt. DON’T! Get a card so you don’t have to carry cash or a checkbook or so you can rent a car. With that, get a Visa or Mastercard as they are widely accepted.

If you never carry a balance, you don’t need to worry about the APR. Without worrying about the APR, you might look around for a card with a high APR but more perks such as mileage or cashback or whatever else floats your boat.

Just a thought.

I agree…I agree…I agree…
Can do everything with it that you can with a credit card except spend money you don’t have.

A debit card doesn’t establish any kind of credit rating. Also, I believe that if someone gets your debit card number, they can clean out your account and cause lots of bounced checks and other problems. A stolen credit card number is a pain in the ass as well, but not as much as a stolen debit card number (in the U.S., at least). Do banks limit liability to $50 on a debit card like they do with a credit card?

I personally pay off my credit cards every month, and can’t really suggest one over another as a result. I believe most cards that grant frequent flier miles have annual fees, though.

I recently looked in to upgrading my ATM card to a debit card. At my bank, at least, debit cards have the same $50 liability limit as credit cards - but only if I notify the bank within 72 hours of the card going missing. After that, my liability starts to climb very fast. I think it was $500 for the next few days and unlimited thereafter.

I’m no lawyer, but I believe the $50 liability limit on credit cards is mandated by law, so the policy is the same for any brand of credit card. I don’t think debit cards have equivalent legal requirements, so your liability may be different at different banks. You’ll have to read the fine print on your bank’s card agreements to see what your exposure is exactly.

Myself, I could too easily imagine losing the card and not noticing for several days. I decided the credit cards I already carry expose me to quite enough liability already, so I didn’t get the debit card.

Except rent a car. Pretty much all of the major car rental companies have made it a policy not to accept debit cards for car rentals, and very few will take cash. Just FYI.

With a debit card, the problem is that even if you only owe $50 in the end, the money is still gone from your bank account until you notify them. So checks may bounce, accounts go late, etc. Bad mojo. On a credit card, it’s just a fluctuation in the balance due, which won’t be important until the end of the month. So no big deal.

Not quite true. Different companies may have different policies, but I rented a car in Chicago a few months ago from one of the major rental car places with my debit card. However, they did “charge” a $300 deposit to my account for the three days I had the car, which was refunded when I returned. Could be a problem if don’t carry a sufficient balance.

I would recommend a compromise. I keep a credit card for emergencies (like needing one to rent a car, or sudden major repairs) but I haven’t used it in years. Debit cards keep me out of debt, which means I have more money to spend (and save).

I’ve had a slight preference for Visa ever since a Chinese restaurant in Italy refused to accept my MasterCard 14 years ago. There you have it.

The best kind of credit card to get is NONE, NADA, NIL, ZERO!!! Please do yourself a favor now. Don’t go there, because it’s a crowded road brother!
