I knew that. Wait a minute.
No, I didn’t.
My favorites have mostyly all been mentioned, but let me ask a question…
So, I was watching “Cold Case” the other night for the first time. It was about a Vietnam era murder around 1969-- junior high school time for me. One of the songs they played was “Crimson and Clover”, and I got to thinking that I’ve always assumed it was a drug song, but is it? Was it just capitalizing on psychodelic imagery, and I’m making too much of:
Ah…
My mind’s such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
It’s not like Tommy James and the Shondells were Jefferson Airplane or anything.
I always thought it was “My, my, such a sweet thing,” referring to the girl.
“Crystal Blue Persuasion” is supposedly about amphetamines, although I could never figure out exactly how.
Although I do like “Smoke Two Joints” by Sublime (first song I ever heard by them) and " Not if You were The Last Junkie on Earth" by the Dandy Warhols (also 1st song. hmmm) too, I like “High” by Feeder, “Heroin Girl” by Everclear and “High” by Jimmy’s Chicken Shack better. A recent one I like a lot as well is “Feel Good Hit Of The Summer” by Queens Of The Stone Age.
BOC: The Last Days of May
'nuff said
*I get no kick from champagne.
Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all,
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you?
Some get a kick from cocaine.
I’m sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrific’ly too,
Yet I get a kick out of you.*
I’ve seen it both ways, but the “mind” lyric makes it more like a druggie song, I guess…
Parched land no desert sand, sun was just a dot
And a little bit of water goes a long way, 'cause it’s hot
Three good buddies were laughing and smoking in the back
Of a rented ford
They couldn’t know they weren’t going far
Each one with the money in his pocket
Could go out and buy himself a brand new car
But they all had the money they had
Money they hoped would take them very far
The sky was bright, a traffic light, now and then a truck
And they hadn’t seen a cop around all day <<what luck>>
They brought everything they needed
bags and scales to weigh the stuff
The driver said the border’s just over the bluff
It wasn’t until the car suddenly stopped
In the middle of a cold and barren place
And the other guy turned and spilled
Three boys blood, did they know a trap had been lain?
They’re ok the last days of may, I’ll be breathing dry air
I’m leaving soon, the others are already there
You wouldn’t be interested in coming along, instead of staying here
They say the west is nice this time of year
Oh, and Steve Earle’s CCKMP is a terrific drug song. It stands for “cocaine cannot kill my pain,” and ends with a verse about how heroin is the only thing that brings him any relief, after having rejected cocaine, whiskey, and even sex in the other verses.
Harrowing (harrowin’?) song.
One from Toby Keith and Willie Nelson for instance…
I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again.
***I always heard that his herb was top shelf
I just could not wait to find out for myself
Don’t knock it til’ you tried it, Well I tried it my friend
And I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and passed him around
The last words that I spoke before they tucked me in
Was I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again.***
How about a song by, The Grateful Dead?
I choose Casey Jones.
Burn One Down - Ben Harper
Methinks I feel a compilation CD coming on…
Truckin’ - The Grateful Dead
Everybody must get stoned - Bob Dylan
I can’t believe it took 52 responses for someone to mention Afroman, that was the first thing that came to my mind.
You should hear The Charlatans (not UK) version on the Nuggets compilation.
(he’ll never be an) ol’ man river by Aussie band T.I.S.M.
I’m on the drug,
I’m on the drug,
I’m on the drug that killed River Phoenix.
I saw his body thrashing round.
I saw his pulse rate going down.
I saw him in convulsive throes.
I said “I’ll have one of those.”
Despite the often-quoted line about Sweet Jane, the song’s about life on the road, not drugs in particular.
“Ain’t it a shame?”
Rocket Man - Elton John / Bernie Taupin
