In boxing or Mixed Martial Arts competitions, it is often referenced that a fighter has been knocked down or out by being hit “right on the button.” What exactly is the button, and why does being hit in that particular spot have such a devastating effect?

The “button” means the “on/off” button and of course more specifically the “off” button. It can be different spots for different fighters.
