When I was an 11-12 year old Pittsburgh expatriate on the West Coast, we won two straight Super Bowls and the intervening World Series, which I think is about the best possible age to have that happen at. I didn’t follow any other sports, so that was about the best possible case scenario.
By 1990, I was following the 49ers, who won the Super Bowl in January, then the Trail Blazers made it to the Finals that summer. That would probably be second place.
Now I am in Chicago, eagerly awaiting the Cubs-Bears-Bulls trifecta which will start this October. Or waiting for the nice nurse to hand out my meds, whichever comes first.
Celtics went to the finals.
Red Sox went to the World Series.
Patriots (technically '87, but all the other games were '86, so it counts) went to the Super Bowl.
The Bruins were mediocre.
Only the Celtics won, but it was still an exciting year.
Being a Northern California boy, my favorites are the San Francisco Giants, San Jose Sharks, Sacramento Kings, and of course the Pittsburgh Steelers…
So, I can only go back as far as 1991, which means the only Championship I’ve got going for me is the 2005 Steelers. But I think my best year all around is 2002:
**Giants **- lost the World Series to the Angels (I’m still bitter about that one)
**Kings **- lost the Western Conference Championship to the Lakers (I’d just rather not talk about *this *one…)
**Sharks **- lost the Western Conference Semifinals to Colorado
**Steelers **- lost in the Second Round to the Titans
My teams collectively came this close to having a fantastic year…and instead wound up with a whole bunch of nothin’…
No no, that can’t be right. The last I noticed, you guys were up 3-2 in the series and had a lead in Game 6. Surely you went on to win that game and the World Series, right?
