SINCE YOU STARTED FOLLOWING THE TEAM, what national or world championships have they won?
Chicago Cubs (MLB baseball): fan since 1986, World Series champions 2016
Chicago Bears (NFL football): fan since 1985, Super Bowl champions 1985
Los Angeles Lakers (NBA basketball): fan since 1986, NBA champions 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010
Florida Gators (NCAA football): fan since 1994, national champions 1996, 2006, 2008
Florida Gators (NCAA basketball): fan since 1994, national champions 2006, 2007
I grew up near Pittsburgh. Since I was born in 1957, Pittsburgh championships have included:
Pirates - 1960, 1971, and 1979 World Series.
Steelers - 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, and 2008 Super Bowls
Penguins - 1991, 1992, 2009, and 2016 Stanley Cup.
I also lived in Denver and became a fan of their teams.
Broncos - 1998, 1999, and 2016 Super Bowls.
Avalanche - 1996 and 2001 Stanley Cup.
N.Y. Mets: 1986, not counting 1969 when I was a baby.
For baseball I grew up a child of a mixed marriage. Brooklyn Dodgers and Yankees. As a kid I was more of a Mets fan. The 70s championships I was interested in because my mother was a fan but I wasn’t a huge Yankee fan. Then there was a multi-year break where I was overseas or far away from home and I didn’t watch baseball. I returned and the Mets weren’t on TV (cable TV bullshit) and my mother was watching the Yankees everyday so I got into them in a big way. So since the early 90s I have been a big Yankee fan but I still have interest in the Mets and try to go to a couple games a year.
I enjoy Chicago sports, but I can only really say I’m a fan of the Bears and the Fire. I also like Illinois football, and the US Men’s national soccer team.
The Bears and Fire have won during my lifetime, but I didn’t actively follow either at the time, being 1 when the Bears one and not yet following soccer when the Fire won.
So no championships of teams I actually follow. I did enjoy the Blackhawks and Bulls championships, but it’d be a stretch to call myself a fan.
I grew up in rural Iowa, with zero professional teams. So it was Gramma’s teams (Bulls/Braves), the only team we heard about (Red Wings), or the team with the player I heard about (Favre’s painkiller addiction).
Boston Bruins fan since 1969 - 1970, 1972, 2011
Boston Red Sox fan since 1969 - 2004, 2007, 2013
New England Patriots fan since 1969 - 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014
Boston Celtics fan since 1980 - 1981, 1984, 1986, 2008
born in 1949
Cleveland Indians (just missed 1948 fan since about 1956) none
Cleveland Browns (don’t recall 1949 1950 1954 1955) 1964
Boston Bruins (fan since 1967-8) 1970, 1972, 2011
I only nominally root for the Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 I really appreciate the championship only so people can stop talking about how long it is since Cleveland won anything.
Growing up in Houston, being a fan was a bit rough. All the teams in town have had their opportunities, even the University of Houston (remember Phi Slama Jama?) but while all have come close, only the Rockets have ever clinched a championship. The rest broke our hearts.
I was a huge fan of the Oilers, but they never won it all during my lifetime. Kept running into this team from Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game.
My Astros have only ever been to the Series once. No joy there, either. And the Texas Rangers haven’t helped that Series drought either.
Chicago Cubs (1965ish): 2016
Green Bay Packers (1965ish): '65, '66, '67, '96, '10
Toronto Maple Leafs (1967ish): '67
Leicester City FC (1996): '16 (Premier League Championship); '97, '00 (League Cup)
Univ. of Rochester (1977): 1990 Men’s Div III NCAA Basketball (played in title game in '92, '05, but lost)
San Francisco Giants: 2010, 2012, 2014
Pittsburgh Steelers: 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008
Sacramento Kings: HAHAHAHAHA!
San Jose Sharks: close, but no cigar
I was born, raised, and still live in Sacramento…but for some reason latched on to the Steelers as a kid, and never let go.
Watched every minute of every game for the 86 Bears. Gave up pro football after they failed to do much the next year.
That left pro basketball as the only team sport I followed. I basically got bored of the Bulls winning the thing…
Now I don’t have any team I would consider “my” team. Was a Cubs fan as a kid, but 69 cured me of that! Then I was a White Sox fan in the 70s, so I was somewhat interested when they won about 11 yrs ago. Of course, most of my memories were tied to the old Comiskey Park.
Cubs fan since the early 80s. I was born in '75, and I still remember the heartbreak of '84. I actually wasn’t in the country during their 2003 run, so it didn’t really affect me as much hearing about the results after the fact. I was surprisingly at peace with them blowing a 3-1 lead in the NLCS. I said if Florida can get past both Wood and Prior at home, they deserve it. They did, and they did. 1989 I wasn’t expecting them to get past the Giants, so that wasn’t difficult. Same with those few years there in the 2000s where they got swept 0-3 in the NLDS. Last year was much more meaningful, as I expected them to get past the Mets or at least win one fucking game against the after sweeping the regular season series 7-0 against them. This year, even when they were down 3-1, I had a quiet confidence that they could still do it, and they did (despite Maddon’s efforts to screw it up.)
Chicago Cubs: 2016
Chicago Blackhawks: 2010, 2013, 2015
Chicago Bears: 1986
Don’t really care about basketball, but I was there for all the home conference semi-final, conference finals, and NBA Finals games in '97 and '98. I have to admit, despite not caring about basketball, it was pretty cool when we won it at home Game 6 in 1997, and it was quite something to experience the history.
