What is the current U.S. military draft policy?

I’ve heard from several sources that people who attend college will not be drafted. Is this true? What if someone is only attending college part time?

I’ve also heard that if someone is the only son in a family or the only person who can carry on the family name, then they will not be drafted. Is this true?

Are draftees given the military ASVAB test and placed into appropraite job positions based on the results? One of the main purposes of the test is to weed out those who are not sutiable for the military. In a drastic time that would call for a draft, would the test still be given?

Is the draft conducted like a lottery where anyone can get called up or is there a lot of criteria that if someone is a dumb college student who happens to be an only son then their ticket won’t get called?

Perhaps reading from the Selective Service System web site might be in order.

Look, since there is no draft, your questions are unanswerable. If they ever decided to institute the draft (which they won’t), they would have to decide on all those things from scratch.

You could get answers for what the policies were like the last time we had a draft. But if we have a new draft (which we won’t), then it is almost certain that they wouldn’t repeat the previous draft policies. The draft laws for Vietnam were different than the ones for Korea, which were different than the ones for WWII, which were different than the ones for WWI, which were different than the ones for the Civil War.

Anyway, the question is moot, since the Pentagon is unalterably opposed to the draft. They want a professional volunteer army, not a bunch of surly conscripts. There is no draft, and there will be no draft.

From this email I got, the draft legislation is rider to that email tax bill in Congress.
