I suggest you spend a little time atthis website. It’s called “Fuckthatjob.com” and it is very enlightening, especially for someone who does what you do.
It was put together by a woman who was getting depressed at the insane jobs being offered, and the pay being offered with them. Pretty funny, as long as you’re employed.
As a guy who’s about to try to enter the job market for the first time, from all accounts (both here and from friends) it sounds like it’s about time to start crapping my pants in panic. I guess I’ll see soon enough how far a Master’s degree can get a guy.
Thanks, Stoid; that’s certainly an interesting site
You know, this was (and is) a pretty BIG company (2000+ employees). I’m not sure I understand how they got so many to work there, although everyone seemed to really like it.
They gave a presentation and didn’t seem to really offer that great a benefits package either (although it wasn’t really specific). The guy mentioned the company picnic, and getting a turkey at the holidays; I guess that’s a big deal to some people, but I don’t get it.
I suppose if you’re just starting out it may be a decent way to get into the software business. They stressed employee retention but after thinking about it, that makes perfect sense. You’ve spent all this time learning and using a propietary OS and programming language, so you’ve not gained any skills to use OUTSIDE of the company, so where could you go?
I don’t know…maybe it’s some sort of cult. :dubious:
International relations. Which thankfully, from most indications, appears to be one of the few growth fields these days. Thank goodness I opted against that Information Systems major 5 years ago.
The market blows. I’ve been temping at a large company for 1 1/2 years now. They like me, but I don’t think they’ll hire me any time soon. I’m content to temp. At least I have a check coming in! And a decent one at that!
Yea, I went off to work and just started back with school again, keeping a PT job in retail for the cash n discounts. Meanwhile, all the hard workers are being hurled into the worst job market in ages. I, meanwhile, will have a couple year’s experience and a degree when I get out.
In TN, the market sucks. Unless you’re a truck driver, in which case, there’s plenty of jobs. If things don’t look up here soon, I’m seriously going to have to consider looking into that.
