You probably passed near my house. Sorry. It’s a crazy house.
My longest drive was NYC to Ft Lauderdale, I forget the mileage but it took 23 hours. I thought I was going to barf towards the end.
I have made 12 (so far) round trips between Huntsville, AL and NYC - 1008 miles each way. Each trip driven straight through, with my dog in the back seat (my official traveling buddy). My record is 13 hours, 45 minutes. It helps to have a radar detector.
Almost 2,000 miles non-stop. Went from OKC, Oklahoma to somewhere between Lewiston/Auburn and Augusta, Maine. I only stopped to get gas and pee. Didn’t eat, didn’t sleep, just smoked and drank Dr. Pepper and drove. It was about 24 hours, as I recall.
My, the things that seemed important at the time.
I went from the Minneapolis / St. Paul down I-35 to Dallas Fort Worth: 985 miles.
It was the summer of 1998, which, if you recall was a summer of record highs for Texas. I drove the whole way in a convertible. I used sunblock, but it made no difference: I had a reverse raccoon impression on my face from my sunglasses.
From somewhere in Pennsylvania to Iowa City, Iowa. In a Freightliner. From somewhere in Ohio to almost Norfolk, Virginia. Again, in a Freightliner. And I put almost 700 miles on my car just wandering aimlessly around Minnesota for a day. (In case you didn’t know, these are 3 different days. )
I drove from Austin, Tx to Boulder, CO nonstop. I think it’s in the vicinity of 900-1000 miles. I tried, but I couldn’t sleep because I was afraid I would freeze to death. It was a miserable drive after an awful experience with a woman but afterwards I had the best sleep ever.
Yeeks. Anyone know where I can get a mileage calculator?
My family drove from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to New York City in a straight 18-hour stretch, and I did all but about 3 of those hours, but I’m not sure just how many miles that was. If you add to that the 6-hour boat ride that took us from Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland to North Sydney, that has to be the farthest I’ve ever traveled in a single day on the earth’s surface.
Aside from that, I’d guess that my longest straight drive in a day, me being the only driver of the stretch, took me from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Grants, New Mexico in a day. But I’m not sure how many miles that is.
Conveyance: 1981 Yamaha 650cc motorcycle with fairing.
Date: October, 1982.
Occaision: The opening of Epcot at Walt Disney World. (It was the tail end of a long, cross-country trip that took me from Texas to California by way of Colorado.)
I used to drive from Denver to Chicago (1000 miles) nonstop all the time. My longest continuous driving extravaganza was probably one (very long) day in Minnesota, where I drove 50 miles, hung out for eight hours, drove another 100 miles, hung out for another eight hours, drove from there (Alexandria, MN) back to Littleton, CO, worked for eight hours, and then drove home 25 miles. All in all about 1100 miles but it took about 40 hours of awakeness to do…
Thanks for the mapquest link. It puts my Fort Smith - Grants trip at 800 miles, but for some reason, it doesn’t seem capable of processing my North Sydney, NS - NYC request, so I’m still not sure of how far that was.
The farthest I have ever driven in one day was from Baltimore down to the south of Virginia, through Shenandoah and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not exceptionally far mileage wise, but the road was so twisty and turny it took about 14 hours (plus one hour for accidently getting lost in DC on the way – oh, was that ever fun). It was incredibly scenic and beautiful, but by the time I got to the hotel and tried to shut my eyes to go to sleep, I couldn’t shake the vision of endlessly driving through the twists and turns.
North Atlanta, to Valdosta, GA, over through Climax to Cairo, GA, BACK to Valdosta, and back to Atlanta via Newnan and Griffin, GA. Numerous stops in small towns to inventory non-open store locations for my last job. I drove from approximataly 6 AM to 9 PM, almost constantly, don’t remember the mileage.
Of course, I used to drive 1500-2000 miles every week for work in the southern US(MS, LA, FL panhandle, central and west TN, MO bootheel, Carbondale, IL, and over to Paducah, KY was my territory. And I jumped around a lot, so I could be in Nashville one day, Poplar Bluff, MO, the next, and Shreveport, LA the day after…
San Diego to Cabo San Lucas
[sup]END TO END OF BAJA CALIFORNIA[/sup]
Over one thousand miles in 24 hours.
Pirahna potholes that ate up tires like licorice lifesavers. Army soldiers with assault weapons to keep the Federales in line. Talk about eerie. One stretch of road must have been built with a laser guided bulldozer. Straight arrow for almost one hundred miles. Lash the steering wheel to the gear shift and throw a brick on the accelerator. Naptime!
Made it in time for a quick snooze and then got up to watch the total eclipse of the sun. Effing spectacular!
