What is the fishiest smelling fish that I could buy canned?

Well, the mackerel worked, sort of. I waited 'til this morning to make sure they were good and hungry. (I was half afraid to go to sleep!)

I mashed the mackerel with a fork, added some juice from the can and put the crushed pill in with about a tablespoon of fish. I couldn’t smell it. Two out of my five picky ones ate most of theirs, then walked away…at about the same time. Fortunately, they both saw the other had left some on their plate, so they traded! Mission accomplished in the end, but I think I’ll try something else next month. Maybe the answer is to keep switching it up. That or let them go hungry another day.

Three cats down, three to go.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

It may be easier to crush the pill, mix with a tsp of cream and fill a baby syringe with the mixture, open cat’s mouth and administer ASAP. This worked very will with my chihuahua who ate so sparingly, that mixing pills in food did not work

I agree with BaldDude. I had a CRF cat who had to have sub-q fluids every other day and a pill every day. She sat like a rock for the fluids, didn’t mind the needle in the least. It was a struggle to pill her until I started crushing it and mixing it with water and squirting it down her throat.

That works for me, too. Bonus: after while, you can scruff, syringe, and let go before they really know what’s going on. My girl cat looks a little confused when I have to give her anything, like, “What just happened? Oh, cream!”

Give them a treat afterwards.

This.

He asked for fishy smelly fish. Surströmming smells like a mix of death and a dog’s ass, not fish. I’d be surprised if the cat gets anywhere near it…

Cod lutefisk.
