It has been a long time since I studied the stuff. I found this cleaning solution at WalMart that said it is 20% HCl. Isn’t that rather strong of a household product?

It might be a bit weaker than that, depending on definitions. 20% HCl by weight in water is roughly 6M, certainly, but maybe they mean concentrated HCL solution diluted 5 times? Conc HCl is roughly 10 M (37%), so 20% of that would be 2M.

It could be this, 6M, or it could be 2.33 M, which would be 20% of concentrated HCl, depending on how the packaging is labeled. So yes, very strong stuff indeed.

either strength is strong. i would use full eye goggles designed for liquids (the kind that are used in labs and industry for dangerous liquids), can be purchased for under $10 USA. use rubber gloves and old clothes.
