What is The Onion referencing in this article?

Here. It reminds me of the movie that Splash Mountain is based on, but it has been years since I’ve seen it.

Also

from here. What is that referencing?

That Splash Mountain movie is Song of the South and the rabbit in question is the Joel Chandler Harris creation Br’er Rabbit (though the article briefly reminded me of how Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit once).

Joel Chandler Harris’ Uncle Remus Tales.

The dialog is very difficult to understand unless you read it out loud. Even then, it helps if you’ve actually heard the dialect.

Slight correction: Harris didn’t create Br’er Rabbit. Br’er Rabbit was a creature of oral legend, first among the Indians (if I am not mistaken), then among the slaves. Harris just wrote the stories down. (Not to detract from his work; it’s just that he didn’t invent the character.)

The baseball reference could be a shot at Clemens, as it’s reported that he’s unhappy being with the Astros and would want to go back to the Yankees.

Oh I don’t know, my kids are very white bread and when I read it to them they get it. Of course it helps if you’ve actually heard Uncle Remus (back when it was easily accessible) and can imitate his inflection. The kids think it’s just a riot.

I think the horoscope is just a throwaway joke and not directed at Clemens since rumors of his possible departure have only recently started and probably weren’t being floated when this issue was being written.

My first thought was that it was a throwaway. However, I thought I’d bring it up as a possibility since I wasn’t quite sure when the rumors started.

And I believe the Yankees only have one left-handed reliever on their roster: Felix Heredia.

And he stinks.

On the other hand, they have plenty of jackasses.

I just looked it up and Clemens isn’t a Libra. Nor is Pedro Martinez. I vote for throwaway joke.

I could be mistaken too, but I recall a debunking of the tales as being fabricated by Harris entirely (as was Uncle Remus).

Anyone have the straight dope on the first instance of Brer Rabbit?

When he heard about the bill, Frist said he “immediately questioned its authenticity” and informed the president that its author, a “Senator Lepus H. Coney,” was not an elected Alabama legislator.
Brillant!
Brea Rabbit used his wits to get out of scraps with Brea Fox or Brea Bear. A famous one is that fox and bear have him trapped and Rabbit proclaims that they can do anything to him except please don’t fling me into the briar patch. (an area of thorny bushes) Fox and Bear decide that since this if the one thing he doesn’t want they fling him in there. Being small, rabbit easily navigates the briar patch without getting hurt.
When ever I hear someone trying to use some reversy psychology I’ll say “Please don’t fling me in dat briar patch!”
