Why do we have pubic hair? Obviously, the hair on our heads serves the important purpose of keeping our brains warm, but I don’t see why the upper groin area would need this extra hair. So, why pubic hair?
The short answer is that no one knows. The leading theory is that pubic and armpit hair is for pheromone transmition. The groin and armpit have a lot more pores than the rest of the body, so the hair is there to soak up all those chemical signals leaking out and present them to the world.
Cecil expands thusly:
I’m sure someone will insist they are hold overs from when we were apes.
Let’s face it, if you didn’t have pubes AND she didn’t have pubes, you might get awfully chaffed during sex. Also, your genitals would stick to your clothes,or your thigh, and you’d be miserable. Shave them off and find out!
My WAG is that any part of the boy that secretes various fluids has hair to absorb said fluids. Armpits, for instance.
As to the shaving thing, I can tell you that chafing is not a problem.
I know they’re curly to keep from poking out your eyes. Or so I heard.
Consider for a moment the purpose of all other hair on the body: regulating the temperature of the region it covers. Extrapolate these phenomena to the pubic area, and viola, the pubic area is kept warm via the presence of hair. What is the reproductive state of one with frostbite in such a region? I would wager to say damn near nil. Additional pores offer cooling properties whilst hair traps heat.
Then why don’t we have hair on our tongue to sop up extra siliva?
I had to shave for my vasectomy. Not entirely, just the scrotum. I was awful. I hated that feeling against my underwear. Yuk.
I do think pubes work to soak up fluids, but they’re also for dry lubrication. A multi-functional body part. Those amazing pubes.
I let the nurse(female) do it for me. Mitigated much of the problem.
Why does it need a purpose? As long as it’s not doing us any wrong. Besides, it serves as a convenient means to verify/falsify one’s suspicions regarding natural hair color
Flossing.
Sorry.
It doesn’t bother me, so I leave it alone.
For some reason I was always under the impression that pubic hair was to prevent friction
NO, I’m SERIOUS!
uh- is no one here asian? Not all pubic hair is curly…
I doubt pubic hair is for warmth. It is too sparse and it doesn’t layer well. Hair/fur only acts at good insulation when it can trap air pockets. It is these trapped pockets of air that provide the bulk of the insulating power; the material the hair or fur is made of is not a good insulator by itself.
Besides, all humans have pubic hair, so it is logical to assume so did the earliest human beings. Considering they lived in Africa, I would be hard pressed to call pubic hair a cold weather adaptation.
Insulation provided by such hair would provide some protection against temperature changes. Some pubic hair does layer quite well.
I will agree that pubic hair is not an adaptation. One can review the fossil records and postulate about the nature of the hair of the australopithecines and early members of the genus homo. Evidence does suggest a prevalence of hair. The continued appearance of pubic hair suggests that its presence preferential in Darwinian terms, thus, I offer the reason which is accepted for the presence of other hair.
I am postulating here, I have no cites, because I just made it up. Think about the old days when we were running around the forest naked. We come across someone of the opposite sex. pheremones don’t work as well as they used to, and men needed to be able to tell if the opposite sex was mature or not. Otherwise it could be a painful experience, dammaging the reproductive capability of the female who would be so traumatized as to be frigid for the rest of her life.
Because men are so damn impatient and in those days wouldn’t take no for an answer the danger was prevalent and the future for humanity depended on men being turned off by the site of an immature female.
Well then, why do men have pubic hair? Well whatever genetic coding provides pubic hair for females also redundantly provides it for males.
