What is the worst looking capital city in Western Europe?

Really ? Where did you live  ?

A tiny town called Leefdaal just off the highway heading east. I worked for an American company that had their home facility in Paal. I would have lived out that way (maybe in Hasselt), but I had schoolkids and wanted them in Brussels American School. At least I was much closer to the airport, as I traveled into eastern Europe a lot for work.

Londonistan should top all lists

London is a very fine city. It is Brussels I would vote for.

London is now what Barnabas Collins (Depp) gave as a description of the Liverpool England he remembers during hypnosis session in “Dark Shadows” (Except he would add smell of Curry and Motorbike Messenger exaust fumes )

Well, that’s pretty convincing.

I see what you did there .

Bratislava or Brussels

I thought Bratislava, too, but wasn’t sure if the OP put it in the “Western Europe” category. I mean, it is an EU country, so if it qualifies, I’ll second that.

Scotland is not a country. It is part if the UK. Scotland to the UK is like Quebec to Canada IMO.

It’s not an independent country, but it is considered a country in most definitions I’ve seen. It’s somewhat like how Greenland s a country, but part of Denmark. Somewhat.

And THIS is why we can’t have nice things!

I don’t agree. Scotland doesn’t have the trappings of a country. No army, no independent foreign relations, etc.

That’s fine, but most definitions of Scotland and the U.K. I see refer to it as a country. Not an independent one, but a country nonetheless. Perhaps you’d prefer to call it something else, but I’m fine with constituent country or something of that nature. A country does not need to be an independent sovereign state.

Sure it does. It’s got its own peerage, legal system, banknotes, national sports teams, etc.

If those are your criteria, then Panama, Japan, Iceland, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Andorra, and many others aren’t countries either, since they also lack an army and/or independent foreign relations.

I was there over 2 decades ago (prior to the fall of Communism), and my first thought was: Am I in Eastern Europe? Sorry to hear this has not improved.

I enjoyed being in Bratislava.

Cardiff, Wales, however…total shithole.

Rome is dirty and not particularly user friendly but looks fabulous.
London is not pristine either but in terms of architectural styles, nationalities represented, arts and music it still feels like the whole world in a single city. (such are the benefits of a long history, rapacious empire and a thorough structural clear-out during the blitz)
Paris is pretty, but rather too uniform for me.
Many (most) other European capitals are interesting in one way or another but…as others have mentioned…Brussels has little to recommend it. It is boring. It hasn’t even put the effort into being a stupid (and wonderful) city like Naples. We have friends living over there for many years but when we visit we never go into the centre and they never recommend it. How likely would that be were they situated near London, Paris, Rome etc?

Pro tip. The “istan” suffix is used for countries. The suffix for cities is “abad”. It would be Londonabad.

Well since the OP defined western Europe as a group of specific countries and that group included Portugal I’d say yes.
