While in Victoria last weekend, we visited Butchart Gardens. Growing in the gardens, near the rose garden (for those of you who may be familiar with the layout), was this bush.
It was probably about 6’ (182cm) tall, and still had all its leaves, although they looked to be yellowing, so it’s possible they’ll be gone soon. The most identifiable part of the bush (for those who don’t want to click on the photo) are the flowers. They are waxy 5 petaled fushia flowers with a teal-coloured centre that looks almost like a pea. The flowers grow in clusters.
If it helps in identification, Butchart Gardens is in Zone 8a, according to their website. As my house lies in a little Zone 2 microclimate within Calgary, I won’t be growing said bush, but I’d love to know what it is for future (possibly moving to San Diego) reference.
