I’ve got my own domain, herein referred to as mydomain.org. For quite a while now I’ve been getting this weird sort of email, which I’ll post here:
What the heck is that thing? Like I said, I’ve received it multiple times, and each time the name (as in name@mydomain.org is different, and it’s always some sort of collection of random letters. What can I do about this?
It’s stuff that gets sent out automatedly to see if it gets bounced back. No bounceback = valid email address. The person doing this is either a spammer or someone compiling a list of valid email addresses to sell to spammers.
Actually it’s a spamming device that attempts to bypass your filtering by being redirected through an innocent, but insecure, third party web-server.
They’re abusing the FormMail.pl script on the insecure open server, which is designed to allow web-browsers to send feedback email to a web page’s author. This is why the email always starts “Below is the result of your feedback form.” Ultimately it works as an anonymous redirector, perfect for spammers.
