what is this hat called?

i just saw a cool hat on the dork who is on “as time goes by” on pbs tonight. it looks like an oversized fedora (black), and it shrieks of italian styling. what is the name of this kind of hat?

A borsalino?

I believe Borsalino a brand name, not a real style, even if they did develop their own particular look. I want one. I could look like Frank Sinatra.

And I believe Lennon called his hat George. Course I’m trying to remember something from the 60’s which is supposed to be impossible if you were there.

nope, not the one…this one has a much much wider brim, and i believe that the upper part sticks up a bit higher.

Is it perhaps a panama hat?

[aside]The first link that comes up is a Google search for “hats” is Hats of Meat.[/aside]

Perhaps it is the Homburg of which Handsome Harry is speaking. A great many citizens may be seen in this type of kady at Mindy’s, especially those who have the good fortune to be well-supplied with potatoes.

I am understanding that this hat is being preferred by such luminaries as Society Max, Nathan Detroit, and Edward Seven, who is namely for being King of England, and furthermore it is seven-to-five that Edward is responsible for bringing this style to popularity, although he is not wearing it in the startling shade of green to be seen at this site:

Here are some more sedate shades of the lid in question, such as will not raise eyebrows of certain citizens:

You are right, waterj2, Borsalino is indeed a brand name. That style. which actors such as Bogart and Cagney wore, is called a snap-brim. Many think it is a fedora but the fedor is a smaller hat.

cool info on the snap-brim biz, tv…at any rate, no one is even close…the hat to which i refer is about twice as wide brim-wise…look at the hat that hannibal lecter is wearing in his last movie, make it a lot wider and black and that is about the one for which i am looking…i saw a picture of mussolini wearing one in john toland’s book on hitler…

I don’t know the name, but is it the sort of hat that Spy vs Spy wore?

Is it a Zoot Suit hat?

The Shadow knows…

Don’t know the particular hat, but if you can figure out which episode of ATGB you were watching, you can probably find a picture and maybe even the name at ATGB Central. If they don’t have the info., put the question on the Comments page and someone will find it for you. The fans there are as well-versed in the minutiae of the show as Star Trek fans.

hmmm…little and h seem to have something pretty close…thanx
