Just thought someone medical could shed some light on this situation. I plan to call my kid’s pediatrician in the morning to ask for advice, but first I thought I’d ask my fellow Dopers. My 12 year old daughter complained of a painless sore in her mouth. When I looked, it appeared to be a solid, small raised lump on the inside of her cheek right near the corner of her lip. When I felt it, it was hard. I thought she had just bitten herself accidentally, but then she told me that in school today, “white stuff came out of it” that she had to spit out. Yaaaaaghhh! What could it be? Anybody have a guess?
I’m not a Peds RN. but it could be a damaged saliva gland that’s pushing through the skin of the lip, a mucocele. I hope your daughter feels better.
Cyn, OB/GYN RN
I get little raised bumps after I eat acidic foods and don’t brush before bed. Bite them open and bitter fluid (like from a blister) comes out.
I’ve had them all my life and never had a problem, though.
Thank you so much for your replies. I looked up “mucocele” and this may be possibly what it is… more than likely it’s a canker sore, but I get all paranoid when something medical occurs. She showed it to me today, and it looks about the same, maybe a little smaller. If it hasn’t gone away by Monday, I’m going to call the doctor and ask him about it.
