What is this strange character "¤"?

Well, what is it? Looks a bit like Sputnik. What’s it doing on my keyboard? What’s it called? Does anyone use this thing for anything?

Oh, and feel free to chuck this in MPSIMS if it’s too mundane for GQ.

Windows Character Map, when viewing the Verdana font, describes ¤ as ‘Currency Sign’.

And I found this:

Looks like the Green Lantern symbol to me.

According to the Wiki article, it’s a generic currency sign, for when you don’t have the proper symbol available. Seems awfully specialized if you ask me.

In reality, most applications use the 3 letter currency code (GBP/USD/etc) in this situation.

In html it’s ¤

Looks fancy when you use it as a text separator

What’s the ALT + for this?

Bosda
ALT + 0164 seems to work just fine

¤

¤

The above symbol was printed at “size 7” just for the sake of ease of viewing.

It kind of reminds me of the doodle from that Vonnegut book.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone use it to indicate an actual generic currency. I therefore propose that we rename it to be the ‘sputnik’ and we can use it as a placeholder when counting planets or whatever.

My thanks.

There are 8. Pluto got the boot.
