I watched Fried Green Tomatoes over the weekend, and I almost didn’t recognize MLP because of her voice. It’s sweet, Southern, and normal-sounding.
On West Wing, MLP has some sort of whiskey-roughened, nasally, growly voice. Did she have an accident or something, or am I imagining things?

She has such a tone of apathy, and she doesn’t move her lips much when she talks. It drives me a little nuts, but I think she’s a good actress. Especially in “Boys On The Side”.
Also, most people’s voices deepen as they get older. We’re talking over a decade between Fried Green Tomatoes and West Wing.
Was she that young in Fried Green Tomatoes?
There’s always the possibility that she’s an actress, and so adapts her voice to the part she’s playing.
I can understand the Southern accent in Fried Green Tomatoes, but it’s not like she’s Meryl Streep in Out of Africa or Bridges of Madison County.
Her voice on West Wing seems harsher, somehow, like she’s chainsmoked just before the scene.
