What is up with sites that make the screen go black?

More & more, I am running into mostly news sites that while I am look at them, my screen goes totally black for a second or three. Sometimes only once or twice but some like this one http://www.nationalreview.com/article/447689/paul-lepage-reforms-maine-welfare-good-model-nation keeps on doing it the entire time I am there.

It it my settings? Theirs, my browsers? It does it also on ‘Palemoon’

I am on Win 7 pro with plenty of horsepower.
Could it be ‘Java’ or ‘Flash’?

Just a bump to say that on my iPad with Safari browser the page loads fine, albeit a bit slowly.

thanks for stating that you are using win-7 and also using java and flash, GusNSpot. what you did not state is your browser. are you using palemoon browser? additionally, [paraphrasing here] “plenty of horse-power” … so you were thinking might have been screen-redraw issue?

flash is being scrapped … so you may as well disable and remove that plugin from your browser … as well as from your os. from what i understand, the reason being too many security holes and also being targeted. java … another huge security risk … disable likewise.

as to your issue, GusNSpot … perhaps your av is blocking the content of the website … so you will not be victimized by malware. are you using ad-blockers? if not, you may consider doing so. any anti-malware you employ?

continue reading on for further info … if you wish:

i pulled up the two websites you indicated … for “palemoon”, did you mean www.palemoon.org ? i had no direct issue with that website. the other website seems to be a smorgasbord of ads … which means amalgamation of malware is hiding.

let’s talk security on your computer, GusNSpot … you have av? if so, which one? how often do you update the reference files? or, maybe they update automatically? how often do you perform “full scan” as opposed to av’s default “quick scan” approach? do you employ only av? or do you have additional sentries … such as malwarebytes 'n ransomfree 'n spyware-blaster 'n rogue-killer? as you can see … today’s security gamut usually embarks on a ‘layered’ approach … no longer one av trumps every danger.

kaspersky’s av has settings that actually ‘black out’ what it considers to be nefarious website pages … when it thinks something sinister is on that webpage. other av’s likely do simlar. i would not defeat or modify av settings … they are there for your safety.

as for my own personal browsing experience … i employ adblockplus as well as ghostery … avast is my av (only because it’s free). also harbor additional sentries in the background. when i pull up websites … some are black-screen for a millisecond and then appear as they should. actually … based on html5 format … takes half-second to full-second for the page to appear correctly. i am using latest firefox (54.0.1).

so … let’s backtrack just a bit … kaspersky anti-virus … it blocks the content for certain websites. such as http://adbucks.brandreachsys.com/ and http://www.getpaid4.com/?amby. ads mean malware … getting an adblocker will bring at least some enjoyment back into the browsing experience. as well … another thing you will notice is neither of these websites implement the security exchange (https) … rather, only the default http protocol.

tell you what, GusNSpot … just before clicking website to access it … try to look at the referring link while your mouse hovers in front of the link … if it shows a website without https … right-click and copy that link. paste it into notepad … type in an “s” into http so it becomes https … copy/paste the appended url (address) into your browser. more 'n more websites are adopting the https protocol but search-engines are slow to pick up on the latest trends. the black-screen may still appear … but the https protocol should help in keeping your computer safe. it will not block everything … which is why you should employ an ad-blocker 'n ghostery (black-lister) … as well as av 'n anti-malware … and other point-of-entry sentries.

ad-blockers should help with the black-screen … however, kaspersky is doing the job you asked it to do … and you are paying for their security, GusNSpot. do not circumvent it. alternatively, try disabling your flash and java … java-script could be disabled if you wish. far as i’m concerned … if there’s a black-screen … i will stay away from that website.

perhaps i have not explicitly answered your question, GusNSpot … i can further help by offering you couple websites to research:

google.com/search

Albino Manatee, thanks, lots of good info.
Yes, Palemoon browser & Chrome.

Usually happens on 2 news sites that get linked to a lot by posters. I stay away from those that want to turn ad blockers off before they let you in.

I do run adblockers and Ghostery.

Some sites I go to seem to need flash & java but I’ll delete them again and see. Also will double check the https thing and also make a list of the sites that it happens on.

Will return with a report.

PS, I used to use Firefox almost excursively but since Pale moon was specially set for windows and has had way less problems for me over Firefox that I went with that. Then Picasa picture service got goobled up by the big “G”, I ended up on google pictures and chrome makes that work easier for me.

I am a fan of Linx but I do not have the ability or patience to got all out on it.

anywho … back after more testing…

Thanks for your post.

Hummm, news links on Facebook are the usual bad guys…

Yeah, face book, I know but family communications ya know…

Okay, happens on Chrome & Pale Moon v 27

Both links cause it. I added the “s” to the http and it still does it on both browsers.

Flash & Java are removed running Ghostry on Chrome, does not work with Pale Moon build.

Both have ad block

Way weird.

I had a similar issue on an older computer that I used to own. It started with a specific video driver update. I was hoping that they would fix it in later video updates but they never did.

So it might be your video driver.

Related to video drivers, I’ve seen odd graphical problems from display customizations. Resetting those (the whole theme) to default might help. Also try a fresh new user account if possible.

I have made 2-3 posts today and they do not show???

All drivers up to date

The link that does it on both Chrome & Pale Moon

Have added s in https, still won’t stop.

Running adblock on both browsers also on Facebook & You tube
Ghostry on Chrome Pale Moon newest does not support Ghostery yet.

Pop blocker on Chrome

It is still happening on both browsers.

Started less than a month ago unless I never hit a nationalreview link before but I have to use FB for family reasons and been on it for years. This just started.

::: gah ::::

I run dual monitors set as all one screen I guess. I just drag stuff from one to the other with the mouse. I do not spread any window across both at once. Mostly keep icons and notepad windows on the smaller monitor and work off the big one which is set a primary.

This happens to me once in a while on Opera/Win7. But after closing something with a video running. The screen goes black, comes back, a warning triangle pops up.

For me, it’s just a combo of drivers, video player, browser, website, etc. not playing well together. So many layers of software are involved it’s basically impossible to assign blame to one of them.

definitely would love dual-monitor here at home … like the setup at my work-place … same as your setup. <sigh>

GusNSpot … thanks for keeping us abreast.

and, yes, i inadvertently failed to mention about websites circumventing adblockers … slipped my mind … so, i apologize for that omission. as for nationalreview.com … i experienced not even a microburst of black-screen. however … i refuse to disable my ad-blockers for benefit of science … even for this stint.

hmmm … GusNSpot, are you a fan of a browser’s “reader-view”? i sometime resort to that … if websites insist ad-blockers be disabled … simply force refresh and, immediately, click “reader-view” … before the website trigger can disallow the reader-view mechanism. if the feature is not packaged natively, one can always find an extension. palemoon may have stripped the feature natively … since, from the little i have read, palemoon’s objective seems to be in skimming down firefox’s riff-raff and offering just basic features … thereby, viewing webpages faster. anyway … in that case, an extension might rejoin the reader-view feature.

just for a moment … let’s consider css (cascading style sheets) … if the z-index for the 48px black-banner on top is higher than the main content … some web-browsers may become obfuscated with the css-code … since all browsers are not created equal. mie, for instance, insisted everything was to be their way … they would not compromise or play fair ball. however, GusNSpot … i truly doubt your issue stems from css intolerance. i have viewed your website in question with firefox 'n chrome 'n vivaldi 'n even mie … have never tried ms-edge. no black-screen appeared even briefly. mini-/maxi-/def-window size without incident. and, this is wholly possible … a certain ad may have been embedded for, say, an hour … and then withdrawn for whatever reason.

there is definitely some merit to what our fellow constituents engineer_comp_geek 'n jjakucyk 'n ftg are bringing to the table … in fact, one facebook user claims he’s found his black-screen solution … even posted video on youtube. might be worth checking out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FumF-AEs5W4

tell you what, GusNSpot … the next website i come to which displays the momentary black-screen at my end … i will post reply in this thread. as you suggested earlier … the issue seemed to emanate within the past 1-1½ months … sounds right by me also. seems a fair assertion microwoft is to blame … since toshiba 'n asus are in different ends of baseball diamond. god knows … with constant ‘patch-tuesday’ liaisons from microwoft … as well as browser-updates 'n av-updates … small wonder anything works in this constrained environment. btw … couple links i posted below might be worth your time to investigate.

p.s. speaking of the big “g” … there’s people asking if google-play-music service might end up merging with youtube … wouldn’t surprise me.
p.p.s. no idea about the “linx” you mentioned … unless you meant to say “linux”. which … if microwoft continues doing what i anticipate it is planning … i will end up replacing windows-os with a linux variant in the not-too-distant future.

So why not do it? Monitors are incredibly cheap these days. (Most recent monitor I bought was at a close-out store–19 inch flatscreen, includes NTSC and ATSC tuners and various AV inputs and outputs–40 bucks.)

Worse when using FB to look at it.
Here is a pic of it on FB and when it was first posted on my feed.

Sometimes location on page and sometimes it seems as if it is a timed thing.
Strange stuff.

When in a browser as a stand alone from the nationalreview link, if I run it up and down from end to end it happens less than the first run but is does no to that all the time or stay exactly doing it at the same place.

Just did it on the wife’s computer and she does not run any ad blocking or Ghostery or…

She shows a LOT of adds but no black outs.

Seems to me the particular site and the adblock & stuff on my computer is the cause…

I hate the ads and that particular site I can live without easier than letting all the advertising in on everything.

White listing that site is prolly the cure but damn, I hate to do it.

Gonna do more testing, back later.

White listing both FB and nationalreview does not stop it.

Need to add flash and java back??
