I have lived in 410 my entire life, at college it is 301. My cell Phone # (when I am home during the summer) is 443.
Does any other area have to dial all ten digits - area code plus actual number - when calling someone? We have to do that in Baltimore, but when I went to NYC last summer, they didn’t…is it a national thing or just for us Marylanders?
UncaBeer,
Shouldn’t that be:
911-2337
(figure it out )
306
330…but I don’t have two lines, so it’s not like anyone can call me anyway
Before I moved: 717
AFter I moved: 215
Speaking of area codes, New Mexico is due for a new one. The official guys who keep track of this stuff have said so. So, the major local-service providers who serve the state got together and discussed plans, and what it boils down to is this. We can either get the current area code chopped down to the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area, or we can get an “overlay” in which all old numbers would keep the current area code, and all new numbers would get the new one, which would involve using the area code for local calls. Now, the majority of consumers prefer the first option, and so did most of the phone companies. But not USWest. Oh, no. Our resident regulated monopoly wants the overlay. They say it will be cheaper. Cheaper? Since when do they care about that? New Mexico is getting the shaft from USWest (motto: “Life’s Worser Here”) in virtually everything. They don’t want to put in any high-speed communications lines, essential as they are for Internet communication, because it wouldn’t be profitable to do so, unless, of course, they got some of these pesky regulations lifted. This in the state with one of the highest concentrations of computing power in the world. The rates for many of their services are more expensive here than they are in just about every other state they serve. And now, when they get a choice between something popular and expensive, and something unpopular and cheap, they go with the cheap option. They don’t care that we don’t want to dial ten digits just to call in sick for work, they just care about their profit margins, which are already higher than the law allows. It makes me sick, and… and… uh, sorry about that. What were we talking about?
Oh, yeah. 505.

Silo, I am glad to give you the benefit of the doubt. I do certainly believe that people can change, and I have seen nothing so far to dispute that you have indeed, grown up.
My area code is, for the moment, 210, though it was 512 for many, many years, and part of the area is also 830 now. Being a military brat, I have had way too many to remember, much less list.
Born-504
Raised-512 (which changed twice since)
Last 30 years-915 and it ain’t gonna change soon.
it was 619, but changed to 858 this year. except my cell phone area code stayed 619 which bugs me.

Hmm…I thought I posted here, but it appears I didn’t…
Silo, my Area code is just the opposite of yours, 408!
Well, it’s a country code, not an area code, but it’s 45.

My life story in Area Codes:
Born and raised in 214, Kepi attended college in the vast Great Plains of 806. Upon graduation, he returned to 214, but he soon left for a short stint in 713. A disillusioned young man whose spirit had been beaten (but not broken), Kepi returned to 214 - to the safety and comfort of his childhood home. Here he stayed for three years as he regrouped mentally, emotionally and spiritually (this is purely exaggeration, real life wasn’t nearly as dramatic).
Then he met the love of his life! Oh, joy of joys! But wait! True Love is being transferred to (dramatic pause) 713! “Oh no, not 713!” Kepi says to himself. But to True Love he says “Where you go, I will follow.” So it was back to 713 for four long years.
True Love and Kepi yearn, however, for the opportunity to return to their hometown. Soon, the moment came and they jumped at the chance to move back. This time, they landed in 817 (which is right next door to 214, which had actually split into 214 / 972, then added a third overlay code 469).
And it is in 817 that they plan to live happily ever after.
The End.
Nacho4Sara asked:
Yes. The Dallas area has three area codes (214/972/469) and callers must dial all ten digits. However, we were already familiar with this arrangement because our next door neighbor, Fort Worth, is in area code 817. Some phone customers in between the two cities have always had the option of having a metro number, which allowed them to make and receive calls to either the 817 or 214/972/469 areas without long distance charges. But you had to dial the area code when placing one of these calls.

That would be 806.
