What is your favorite day of the year?

Looks like Halloween is quite popular amongst the TM. It used to be mine for a long time when I was younger. There was nothing like going around your neighborhood in the dark dressed up like something you would never dress up like otherwise, and getting more candy than you could imagine. And doing it with our friends. It was the best!

I seem to remember my dad would go with us and trick or treat for a beer every few houses. No wonder he liked it too.

I’m fond of The Ides of March, because no one else remembers. I’ll mention it and it sounds really familiar to everyone, but it’s good for laugh when people come up with the wrong play.

Amen to that. I can’t wait. Luckily, I am blessed with a wife who loves sports almost as much as I do. She loves going to live games, and will watch on TV if it’s a big game.

I also love the Christmas holidays. The family gets together, good food and drink, exchanging gifts with each other, college bowl games on TV[sub]well, what did you expect?[/sub].

Christmas Eve has never been that big a deal in my family. It’s simply the day before Christmas.

But damn do I loooove Christmas. Even after my parents’ divorce two years ago, it remains my favorite day. I love it because I’m always wearing some really nice sweater I just got that day, some new pants I just got that day, and they feel really snug and warm.

Then I get to see the kids in our family (in the past 5 years, there’s been a huge influx of babies), tear through all their gifts at once. All that noise of wrapping paper being torn and kids laughing is too much fun.

Then I get to go home and play with all the stuff I got… overwhelmingly DVDs and CDs at my age (22.)

Unfortunately, I’m pretty much a full blown adult now, so I doubt I’ll be going to Christmas Day with the family decked out in new clothes and looking forward to playing with a bunch of new stuff. But at least the kids will still be there.

I was going to say any day when its 80 degrees out, but that doesn’t happen often enough up here.
It must be November 26th, MY birthday.
I enjoy telling everyone and its nice to be told Happy Birthday.
Oh, and the cake too…

Christmas Eve. The anticipation of Christmas is more exciting than the actual day, which in recent years hasn’t been nearly as fun as it was when I was 10. My husband and I love driving around on Christmas Eve looking at the lights, stopping for coffee somewhere that’s playing holiday music, the last minute bustling for gifts…

The first day in April/May where it hits about 75 degrees. People don’t know what to do with themselves, they strip down to tank tops, shorts, sundresses, sandals, etc. and just bask in it. Convertible tops come off, motorcycles swarm the roads. The men just about lose their minds when women start wearing strapless little summer dresses again after 5 months of being covered. Even if the next day is 45 degrees people will still wear their summer clothes as if to beckon the warmth back to earth again.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the first day after a long, sweltering Washington summer when it gets down to fall temperatures. You can smell the crispness in the air, the energy levels are a touch higher, and cheeks are pink with the slight chill as opposed to the searing heat.

February 29th, for example. [sub]I can’t take credit for that one, but it cracks me up all the same[/sub]

Funny you should ask about my favorite day of the year – it’s tomorrow. Every year on the first Saturday in July, the local Amish community here in central WI hosts a consignment auction to raise money for their school. Amish craftspeople from as far away as Missouri bring furniture, quilts, toys, and other crafts, which are auctioned off all day. It’s held on an Amish farm, and they sell fabulous food all day; there’s also a farm equipment and livestock auction out in the field. It’s a blast to watch the Amish and “English” working, laughing, and enjoying themselves together. Occasionally we get friends to join us. There are a lot of good deals, and many clever creations that you don’t see elsewhere. The auction assistants really know how to work a crowd, and there’s often applause after a really big purchase.

One year we bought so much that the auctioneer (it’s the same one every year) asked us if we had a store! (We don’t – we just had a bunch of old, crappy furniture we wanted to replace, and Mr. S loves good woodcraft.) Another year, we didn’t spend much, but we ended up “goosing” a lot of bids and increasing their revenues. After several years of attending this auction, our house is now mostly furnished and decorated with wonderful handmade Amish items. This year we won’t be buying much, as Mr. S just got a new, lower-paying job after being unemployed since February, but we still have a few hundred dollars we can spend, and we’ll still have fun watching the festivities.

Ooh, I’m getting excited just thinking about it! Only half a day away!

I have two favorites, as well.

Halloween because I really like to pretend I’m someone or something else. I’ve loved pretending since I was little and I still remember my first Halloween costume: I was a little pink bunny at about two years of age. I’m now in High School and I still go trick - or - treating with some of my buds. Granted, we get funny looks from most people, but I live near college dorms and housing. Hehehe…

My other favorite day is opening day to ANY show that I participate in. I love the rush of “What’s going to happen? Is someone going to mess up and make me cover for them (Yes, I’m a little conceited)” and all that jazz. It gives me a wonderful rush! Of course, I usually end up bleeding in some way, usually on my left pointer finger, on opening nights, but I wont get in to that.

That’s why I like to take note of Guy Falwks Day. Being American, I can be pretty certain nobody here but me will remember it. But I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

That and Bloom’s Day.

Geez, all these holidays mentioned and even the people posting ON the 4th of July didn’t mention the 4th of July. It’s a day I always look foward to- because it’s the anniversity of the day I lost my virginity. That IS what all the fireworks are in honor of, isn’t it?

My favorite day of the year is SuperBowl Sunday…no matter which teams are playing it is always a fun filled day. There are parties all over the place and it’s not one of those “holidays” that you have to spend with your family.

Watching and critiquing all the new big-budget commercials, laughing at the silly half time show, hoping that this year the game is not a blowout, drinking lots of beer, eating lots of good food and enjoying time with friends…it doesn’t get much better!!!

Another thing I like about the SuperBowl is it’s ONE GAME, not a long drawn out series like the NBA or baseball or hockey…

The only thing I don’t like about it is that means football season is over and there is a long wait until the next game.

I concur! And I’m glad to see I’m not alone with such a “shallow” choice! Super Bowl Sunday is like Thanksgiving in January (Thanksgiving would be my second choice), but edges it out because:

  1. Both involve lotsa drinking, but SB Sunday more so;
  2. Both involve lotsa good food, but unlike Thanksgiving one isn’t compelled to eat Turkey & trimmings–make it BBQ, Chili, whatever!; and,
  3. Unlike Thanksgiving, one isn’t compelled to either spend it with or call one’s family!

Not that I dislike turkey and family; quite the contrary. However, after a full season (Thanksgiving to Christmas) of the two, it’s good to end the Holiday Season with neither–and still have a great day. In defense of Thanksgiving, it’s a close second for two reasons:

  1. You get time off for Thanksgiving, and
  2. It’s at least guaranteed that the DALLAS COWBOYS will play on Thanksgiving! Woo-hoo!

It used to be Valentine’s Day where people can be so very happy and there’re warm fuzzies everywhere. I used to buy all me female friends a rose or flower (yes the local florist really liked me) just to bring a smile to their face and make sure they got something. That’s become a bit more subdued in recent years however.

Atm it’d be a toss up between the first day of the first cricket Test Match of the season or a special day that’s less than a month away.

National Hug Day, because I finally get to bounce around and give hugs to all my friends and even complete strangers without getting quite as many odd looks. Although I’ve calmed down since I got into high school.

More Recently…
Valentine’s Day, sure it can be depressing if you don’t have anyone special to spend it with but I love making stuff and baking for my friends, just a little something to make them feel special.

Kitty

I doubt you’d care but if anyone wanted to know National Hug Day is January 21st.
