Recently there have been a few threads and posts that refer to Douglas Adams and some of the posters have included some quotes from his books or just things he’s said so I’d like to start a thread of everyone’s favorite Douglas Adams quote. I’ll start off with one of my personal favorites:
“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.”
My favorite quote is,
"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is another which state that this as already happened."
-Restaurant at the End of the Universe
And Dirk Gently’s critique of Holmes’ maxim, of course.*
*Possibly because I positively hate Sir Arthur for attributing such an infuriatingly flawed bit of reasoning to the Great Detective. Such a statement seems more like one of Sexton Blake’s head-scratching utterances.
“It is very likely that, on arriving, some cheerful Australians will ‘adopt’ you on your first night, and take you to a pub where Australian Beer is served. Despite the obvious danger, do not refuse. It is a form of initiation rite. You will wake up late the next day with an astonishing hangover, a foul-taste in your mouth, and wearing strange clothes. Your hosts will usually make sure you get home, and waive off any legal difficulties with “It’s his first time in Australia, so we took him to the pub,” to which the policeman will sagely nod and close his notebook.”
One of my favourite quotes is from SLAT, where Ford’s full entry on Earth is restored to the Guide. I don’t have the book to hand, but essentially it suggests that all aliens landing in New York should immediately get a job as a cab driver because Manhattanites will be so pleased to find one who speaks English that they won’t care what you look like.
The best of all is, of course, “You’re really not going to like it.”
“This must be Thursday,' said Arthur to himself, sinking low over his beer, I never could get the hang of Thursdays.’”
It describes my approach to Thursdays perfectly.
Life, the Universe, and Everything, Chapter 7 on Squornshellous Zeta.
“Several billion trillion tons of superhot exploding hydrogen nuclei rose slowly above the horizon and managed to look small, cold and slightly damp.” Just before Marvin talks to the mattress.
Good pick.
“I seem to be having tremendous trouble with my lifestyle.”
I’ll add just one more quote for now, from Last Chance to See. An excellent *non-*fiction book, with plenty of good information but still a lot of funny lines, like:
