What is your favorite ginger beer?

5 pounds?!?

Mystic Seaport makes a pretty good ginger beer. It has mustard and capsaicin in it, so it’s even hotter than normal ginger beer.

Canada Dry or Vernons.

Come to think of it, I drink Faygo ginger ale too.

I guess I’m just not that picky.

(However diet Vernors and sugar free vanilla ice cream make the best Diabetic Boston Cooler in existance)

Nope, I don’t peel it. I do scrub the outsides well to get off all dirt (it’s a root ya know). I’ve found that I have to break off all the fingers (ginger comes in hands I believe) to make sure I get it all clean.

Yep. 5 lbs of fresh ginger, results in 5 gallons of beverage. And there isn’t much flavor left in the ginger solids when you are done.

OK, if you say so. I’ve copied the recipe into my brewbook. Once I get my kegging system set up again, that is going to be one of the first things I try that isn’t beer.

A local jamaican restaurant on (rare) occasions brews their own ginger beer. Not carbonated, but to die for!!! So hot, just the right amount of sweet!

Sadly, lately their other food has sucked, and the place wasn’t really clean at the last visit, nor did they have their home brew.

Anybody ever try some of the Aussie ginger beers?

Oops! I see Maxxxie already weighed in on that subject, Aussie Ginger beers.

Care to share further insights, Maxxxie?

OK. I just tried a Cock & Bull. I wasn’t impressed. Too smooth. I know, you warned me.

I love Stewart’s, but I’m currently in Wisconsin and seeing Barrett’s in all the bars being used as a mixer. Last night’s bartender swore it was the best, so now I’m intrigued. Will try some and report back.

I didn’t start this way, but the Dark and Stormy is the only way I could become an alcoholic and this is the best combination.

I did discover though a little store that sells unfiltered ginger ale that really tastes much more like ginger beer. It is really good. I wish I could remember the brand.

Some friends of mine turned me on to Blue sky gingerale a few years ago and it’s now the ‘treat’ beverage of choice my house.

Bundaberg by a long way.

I’m partial to about 6 oz Bundaberg or Fever Tree, 2 oz gold rum like Mount Gay Eclipse and the juice & shell of half a lime over ice.

Sort of a “Overcast and Rainy” instead of a “Dark and Stormy”, but good nonetheless.

Zombie ginger beer!

So far, the best I’ve found is Buderim Aussie Style Hot Ginger Brew. I haven’t had it in a while since the café I got it from changed ownership. I like HOT ginger beer. I’ll have to look for Blenheim.

okay 'splain to the yank, here. ginger beer and ginger ale are the same thing, yes? non-alcoholic, correct? is there an adult beverage version of ginger beer? i hope?

Originally, ginger beer was alcoholic. Nowadays it’s (almost?) always non-alcoholic. Basically ginger beer is stronger than ginger ale, and is ‘spicier’ (hence the ‘hot’ in the product I linked).

fixed url tag, and moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Other than on the internet, I’ve never heard of ginger beer, just ginger ale and Vernor’s which is sort of like ginger ale but doesn’t call itself that.

I was making ginger beer to this recipe earlier this year and my family was drinking it as fast as I could brew it. IMO, it will ruin Bundaberg for you.
