Nope, it’s a soft drink, like root beer, except made with yummy ginger and lots of it.
He’s awesome-I use that link for my cheese recipes. In fact, I’m starting on a chevre today.
My daughter and I made ginger beer today. I can’t wait.
( and, it looks like a bottle of urine with chunks in it. That’s always fun.)
It never even occured to me to make my own! I’l see about making some tomorrow, or next weekend if I can’t get the ingredients.
I dunno, I’ve got to give a big thumbs down to Reed’s Extra Ginger Brew. I picked some up on the way home, and it’s waaaayyyyy too heavy with the pineapple, and not nearly enough ginger. I still vote for Natural Brew’s Outrageous Ginger Ale–very spicy with nice burn in the throat and not too overly sweet.

I like Reeds a lot. However, my girlfriend does not. She doesn’t like Stewart’s either.
I tested my first batch of Ginger Beer.
It tasted like flat vernors.
I would like to add that I had a 6 year old helping me and I am pretty sure I used the wrong amount of freshly grated ginger called for and didn’t use enough.
I am definately trying again and on the search for root beer extract, too.
Welcome moscowmule but I’m sure whatever ginger beer was around when this thread started is quite skunked as it’s 13+ years old!
To answer your question, no they are not the same as one is a carbonated soda & the other is a beer. It may impart some of the same flavor but the carbonation will make it different.
To answer the OP’s question (since the thread was bumped), I liked Shandy Carib but haven’t seen it in many years. I thought they stopped making it, surprised that I could find it in a quick search as I thought I remembered searching for it & found out they were out of business; I wonder if I’m misremembering or if someone bought out their licence & is making it new?
moscowmule is bumping every thread possible this morning. Be careful out there!
Faygo Brau! It was so good, gone far too soon!
For extant brands, Goya Jamaican style is the best I’ve had.

Stoney, simply because I’ve not had anything else.
On the other hand there’s a distinct type of ginger beer called “ginger ale” in North America, and hands down, Vernor’s for the win.
I like Barritts.
