What is your opinion of the Matthew Shardlake novels by C.J. Sansom?

I just heard about these and I’m definitely intrigued. They’re obviously not short reads. The Amazon reviews are mixed.

So, let’s hear what the teeming millions have to say. I assume these should be read in order?
