That was the only thing I did. Just open to the possibility there’s more to it. Hoping there was? So … still saddened. None of us are perfect in our posting personas and it is not a good outcome if he feels this place is unwelcome to him.

i can’t say i’m fond of where this thread has gone. I get it sometimes when pits backfire, but I didn’t really feel like Stranger was being enough of a jerk to deserve that.
I’m not like super upset about it or anything. Not gonna yell at anyone in particular or anything. But this was not the way I expected this thread to go at all. I could see him also not enjoying it and feeling pretty bad.
Certainly none of us are infallible, especially when expounding outside our areas of expertise. Even the most diligent of “research” i e. Googling can lead one astray.
True Renaissance men/women are hard to find, especially among anonymous Internet posters.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Stranger took time off and pouted for a bit after getting chided as I recall. Anyway, I’m with @BigT and agree with her last post. The point has been made.
You are not alone, @DSeid. I’ve noticed @Stranger_On_A_Train’s absence as well, and hope he returns. He adds a lot to the board, and I really enjoy reading his grad-school-reading-level posts. 
Frankly, his educated, intelligent posts with a sprinkling of snarkiness remind me of the original Straight Dope columns by the Perfect Master himself.
Oh, I think he’s one of my favorite posters here. I’m just coming away with a little more caution about what I, personally, accept as true without any due-diligence on my part.
I think Stranger’s posts are often very well informed and helpful. The fact not quite all of them are is hardly unique to any poster.
The problem with snarkiness is when the person doesn’t know what they are talking about and then it’s annoying.
Unfortunately, it’s fairly common on the Dope and certainly isn’t limited to either the OP or the pittee.
You know what, that is just tough. Time for him to put on his big boy pants. I agree Stranger is an extremely valuable poster but everyone, and I mean everyone, has been called out at least once for things they have posted. If you are going to post here, you need to have a thick enough skin to take the occasional ribbing. No one gets a pass here.
I don’t disagree. I am sad that he is not currently posting and hope that he returns, but yeah. Criticism is par for any course. And in this case while I am sorry the criticism (which came in the manner not at all unreasonable or surprising for a Pit thread) was possibly enough to drive into a hiatus, it was not off the mark. Ideally we have thick enough hides to consider criticism for possible validity and possible opportunity for improvement. Or after reasoned consideration to reject it without hard feelings.
My sadness that he is currently absent is less regret that his Pit thread blew back at him, that happens with fair frequency and any Pitter should be ready to become the Pitee, than sadness over the result.
I remember in the Blake days, when he got caught in a 100+ long posting thread where he was clearly in the wrong and doubling down against multiple posters, instead of ever admitting he was wrong, he’d just stop posting on the dope for a few weeks to months and then randomly slink back in, pretending nothing had ever happened.
Since we’re all tossing in our takes. My take is that a lot of the people who are picking on Stranger are because he disagreed with them on one of their precious topics. It’s certainly possible that he is wrong in some areas, but I’ve not seen it in any topic I’m familiar with. Wolfpup doesn’t like that Stranger doesn’t fellate the dicks of the LLM gods. Chessic_Sense is pretty much always wrong about everything, but his beef with Stranger seems to be around the shutdown. If Dallas_Jones didn’t like me, my day would be made. Saint_Cad will never be in the same league as Sabine Hossenfelder, whose name he can’t even spell correctly. If that’s the peanut gallery picking on Stranger, then I don’t feel swayed.
I certainly haven’t read all of his posts, but when it comes to data science related topics, he absolutely knows his stuff, probably far better than me and I managed DS teams for a good 12 years before retiring. Chronos gets nitpicky with me on occasion, but it’s probably warranted for the most part, so I brush it off. If he goes over the line, I’ll tell him to fuck off (in the appropriate forum). Same with Stranger. What I’m absolutely NOT going to do is fart around in a thread throwing accusations at either of two highly intelligent posters without at least a few links to back me up.
I’m just not seeing the difference in the three spellings. Try linking to the correct post at least.

Well, yes, we’ve had disagreements, but that’s not what drove me to contribute to this pitting. It was his flagrant lying, accusing me of dishonesty by allegedly editing my quotes of him in ways that were deceptive. He has never explained just exactly how my quotes were deceptive, or why he exploded with such hostility to a simple factual correction on the water vapor issue, accusing me of “stalking” him. It appears that this pitting has driven him away at least temporarily, and that’s too bad because he was a valuable poster. But I don’t take kindly to being called a liar when I’m posting in good faith, so at least in that respect, he can fuck right off.

My annoyance generally comes from my experience that he’ll post 2 sentences’ worth of intelligent reply to a topic, combined with 8 sentences of tangentially-related blather (TRB). And someone else in the same thread is almost guaranteed to post the same 2 sentences’ worth of information without the superfluous padding.
I’ve posted more than my share of blather over the years, but at least I send it out as single spies, not battalions.
The fact that every single post of his is guaranteed to end with a 100% redundant piece of information is just the turd icing on the blather cake.
Well, at least we can all agree on one thing. Kate Bush does, indeed, suck.
