What is your work day? What is your work week? A Poll

My availability for work is 5a - midnight, 7 days a week. My shifts tend to be 6:30a - 3:30p, 10a or 11a - 8p, or 2p - 11p. I usually work 5 days and 40 hours a week, but rarely more than three days in a row. The only problem I have is that I cannot get into a routine for my sleep / wake times, but this is something I’ve been doing for 8 years. My schedule next week:

S: 2 - 11
X: 2 - 11
M: off
T: 6:30 - 3:30
W: 7 - 2
R: 2 - 11
F: off
My commute is 5 miles and 15 minutes, and my pay is hourly. I do not have the sort of job that permits telecommuting, but on the flip side neither is it possible for me to take my work home with me. When I punch out, I’m out and I don’t have to worry about anything.

I’ve had the 8 - 5 M - F desk job, and I never want it ever again. I like my scheduling variety, and I love my 2-3 days on, 1 day off cycle. I will never understand why anyone would want to work 5 on 2 off. Aren’t you always dead by Thursday?

Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 1630 hours (one hour lunch). I occasionally work later, but it’s rare. I’m usually at work 20 minutes to half an hour early because of parking and traffic issues.

Commute to work is around 30 minutes, IF I leave before 6:30 am.

Commute home is around 45 to 50 minutes.

I usually listen to music while commuting and yell at the stupid drivers on my commute (with the windows up of course).

Teacher. During the school year, my official hours are 8:15-4:15, five days a week. I am usually there by 6:30 (15 minute commute) and leave between five an six. I work at home grading probably 5-7 hours a weekend. And I probably spend 3-4 hours a week moderating the class message board and answering emails.

Then there is a lot of “grey” time that may or may not count as part of my job–academic decathlon practice is 7-9 one night a week, and most weeks there is at least one and more often two things that I stay late for–football game, National Honor society induction, parent-teacher conference night, musical . . .I say all that’s grey because it’s not strictly part of my job and I really, really enjoy it all. On the other hand, it’s clearly work-related and does help me be a more effective teacher. So I dunno.

What is your work day? Flexible? Very. I see patients M-W-F (psychologist). I don’t go in 'til 12:00. Tues/Thurs I work from home, doing insurance billing, making calls (occasional phone session) and doing freelance commercial art projects. Sometimes I work fairly late those nights.
Do you work 8 hours, not counting commute? All told, I think I do, it just doesn’t feel like it.
** Staff or hourly pay?** Self-employed.
My office is about 6 minutes from my house.

I know I have it great. I could probably work a good bit more and make more money, but I value my time more than money, and that’s even with loving both the things I do.

45 min. commute in (cause I take the bus)
20 min. commute home on the train.
Hours are 8:00-17:00, 40 hrs/week.
I am salaried but I get overtime.
I do not have any sort of flex time really, though I have done 7:00-16:00 in a pinch.

I loathe getting up this early and working more than my flatmates (they both work 9:30-17:30) and getting paid the same!

I own my own English school and am the sole teacher at the moment. I teach Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9:30 to 5:30pm with a two hour break in the middle. (So six class hours a day). However Wednesday is my admin assistant’s day so I don’t get a break at all that day, and Thursday I teach an extra class at night. Monday is my office day and Friday is supposed to be my day off but it rarely happens that I have nothing that needs to be done.

My commute is about one second from the “home” side of the house to the “school” side of the house, with an additional second taken to lock the connecting door.

I’m my own boss and I love it. I’ll never go back to regular teaching either…

I work across North America, travelling most weeks and doing 85% of my work at customer sites. Consequently, my work schedule is inconsistent.

However, my average work week is about 55 hours, of which, on average, about 15 is spent travelling.

I work 7:30-3:45, salary paid weekly. I typically leave around 4, though, because I’ve discovered that the 15 minute difference is the difference between a good and bad parking spot in front of my apartment  That includes a 15 minute break (which I never take) and a 45 minute lunch, which tends to go more towards 50 minutes. The hours are quite flexible - I could start anytime between 7 and 8:30, and I have up to a total of 2 15 minute breaks and a 1 hour (unpaid) lunch that I could take, which would simply change the time for when I go home. I get paid overtime, and Fridays the company gives everyone a 1.5 hour lunch, with the 0.5hr paid. We also get summer hours (Friday afternoons off). I reverse commute - it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work, the entire time laughing at the poor suckers trying to go the other way (of course, up until a couple of months ago, I was one of those suckers, driving about 55 minutes each way unless I took the paid highway - 6.50$ one way to save about 10-12 minutes!) When not laughing at other drivers, I listen to music and talk to myself (crazy? me? no!) The drive home is about the same.

I love the hours and company I work for. The work itself is good too, but I’ve known for a while that this isn’t what I want to do for a living, the problem is, I can’t figure out what direction I want to go in, so it probably won’t last more than a year or two. But who knows?

Normally a 40-hour week, M-F. We have to be present during the core hours of 9-2, and we’re allowed to work thru lunch. I arrive at 6 and leave at 2. On days when I have training or meetings that keep me after 2, I can accumulate credit hours, up to 24 total, to be used as I wish.

I live 26 miles and across the state line (MD-VA) from my work, and it rarely takes me longer than 30-35 minutes.

I work between 40 and 50 hours a week, M-F 8:15 until 5 or when the work is done or you’re too tired so you knock off and finish dictating the next day. I work one out of every three Saturdays; same deal, 8:30 until the work is done, which tends to be 2-4 hours but can be 9.

I’m on call every third night, which usually means I handle the occasional phone call in my sleep. I almost never have to get up out of bed and go to a scene. Know it can happen and it’s part of the job, though.

Monday through Friday I start work between 7AM and 9AM, depending on how many patients I have in the hospital. Most days it’s 8:00-8:30.

I start clinic at 10:00. I’m in clinic until 7:30PM on Monday, 1:30PM on Wednesday, and 5:30PM the rest of the week.

I’m on call every third weekend, soon to be every fourth; on those weekends, I have between 3 and 6 hours of work to do each day, and I can really do it anytime. (I usually go in around 11AM.)

I’m on call 24/7 for the hospital except for the weekends that I’m not on call; I get called several times a night (all night), but almost never have to go in. This, too, is about to change, and it’s about damn time.

I’d love to have a more flexible schedule. I’m thinking about starting to do my hospital rounds after clinic, since I’m not at all a morning person and because that way I wouldn’t feel rushed to get things done in time to get to the clinic.

I live five minutes from the hospital and ten minutes from the clinic. I’m salaried.

Stockbroker for a major discount brokerage firm.

I work 8:45 AM until 5:15 PM most days Monday-Friday.

I don’t get most days often.

It varies by week, usually it is some time between 7 AM and 6 PM.

**What is your work day? **Often 7:15 - 6:00, but it varies widely. I do a lot of grading, prep, and note-writing in the evening, plus answering work-related e-mail.
**How many hours a week? **It varies a lot. I’d estimate an average of 50-70 hours a week.

Salaried for my basic teaching, flat credit-hour rate for my adjunct teaching, and a flat per-person rate for my practice, which pays for the therapy hour and related paperwork, research, and communication (unless it’s a pro bono client).
**Do you work Monday through Friday all the time? **Never. In fact, it’s Saturday and I’m teaching a class all day even as I type (we’re on a 15-minute break).
**How do you manage your work week? Is it the work life-style you prefer, or would you go for another way of doing it? **I enjoy it, though I sometimes impose a moratorium on work time at home since it could expand to fill every moment.
Have you had the pluperfect work situation and left it? I like this very well. I’d like to work slightly less, and I’ll be moving that way within the year. I had two jobs I really liked and that worked well together for a couple of years: Freelance with speed bonuses plus night/weekend on-call counseling. However, I make more money more consistently and have a more normal schedule now.
If you DO drive to and from work, what do you do, or not do, in the car when driving? I sometimes drive to work. I usually listen to NPR unless the news is too depressing; then I put on classical or rock.

**What is your work day? Flexible? **
Extremely. I’m self employed with an office in my home, but I also work a few hours a day for another engineering firm which is in the same “niche” business I am.

**8 hours, not counting commute? ** That varies greatly. Mornings, my Hubby gets up at six, but I usually snooze another couple three hours before getting up to make sure my son gets off to school. I then do a little housework, check email and voicemail, return calls, enter things in the computer, etc. After lunch I go down to the “away” office until about 6 pm. The drive takes 12 minutes. After returning home, I’ll work on my own projects until 9 or 10 pm. Or not. :stuck_out_tongue:

** How many hours a week? ** Again, that varies. Probably somewhere around 40, though. I’m a sole proprietor, so if I don’t work I don’t get paid. I end up working a little bit every day of the week - spreading it out seems to help.

** Is it the work life-style you prefer** I love love LOVE it. I second everything which Scarlett said about being self-employed.

**what do you do, or not do, in the car when driving ? ** Watch out for nuts on the road. Lots of times I eat a sandwich - gets lunch out of the way while doing something productive.

What is your work day? 4AM-1PM 5-6 days/week, mostly 6 (I work Sundays), but every once in a while I’ll get two days off during the week to make up for it. Days off aren’t set unless I ask for a specific day. Around holiday time I’ll go in at 3AM. I’ll stay past 1PM if needed.

How many hours a week? Standard is 40, excluding Sundays. It can go up to 50-55 depending on how busy we are. Hourly pay.

Do you work Monday-Friday all the time? No way, no how. Weekends are mandatory.

How do you manage your work week? I’ve been pulling this gig for so long that I had it down to a science before I married and before my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Before both, I’d come home and do chores until I crashed 2-3 hours later. I’d wake up, have dinner, watch TV or futz on the computer, then go to bed. Nowadays I come home and take over the caregiving duties for my husband. Some days I feel as though I need to pry my eyes open with toothpicks. I usually make dinner. As soon as I get Mom to bed (around 8PM), I follow suit unless I’m too wound up on my second/third wind.

Have you had the pluperfect work situation and left it? Not really. There’ve been times I’ve been scheduled later in the morning or afternoon/evening, but I’ve found that my present schedule fits me. I love the quiet of very early morning because it’s the only time I can collect my thoughts and do anything without distraction. I discovered a long time ago that I could never fit into a 9-5 M-F lifestyle.

If you DO drive to and from work, what do you do, nor not do, in the car when driving? I usually listen either to NPR or one of my cheesy '80s compilation CDs. If neither interest me, I turn on the oldies station and pretend I’m the Goddess of Arena Rock

Of course I forgot to proofread before hitting “submit” :smack:

My work week is 7:45 - 4:30 M-Th, and 7:45 - 12:15 on Friday. It’s a sweet schedule, but not flexible AT ALL. I get written up if I’m 3 minutes late.

I have about a 10 minute drive, or a 15 minute bike ride.

You think NYC has long commute times? You should come to L.A. 2 hour commutes are for sissies. (although you’ve got us beat on the cost of parking in a structure)

Luckily, mine is only 30 min each way and I only work about 25 hours a week. I work mostly nights (about 5PM-10PM) with one or two day shifts (~12PM-3 or 4PM) a week. It’s hardly luxury living, but I am supporting myself this way.

Oh, I’m in L.A. a few times a year. I land at LAX, and rent a car and drive to Glendale. If I land at midday, I know I can get there by next week. If I land at 4:00 pm, I am guaranteed of spending my forties in the car, staring forlornly out at the 101, 110, 405, 5, 10 and 2.

It is the Math Insanity Roadway System out there. Feh !!!

4x8: M-Th 8:30 - 5:00 or so, salaried

Sometimes I’m needed late, and sometimes things happen on a Friday that require my attention, so it probably averages more like 35 hours a week. Commute’s 10-15 minutes depending on time of day.

I love it. I work in one of those professions where full-time salaries are more than I need even to save for retirement and the like, and given the choice between retiring a year or two early, or working fewer hours every week of my working career, I’ll take the more relaxed route any time.

Then I waste it all by spending the extra time on my home business. :smack:
