What Just Happened?

It’s 11:00 PM. Hubby has to leave for work at 4:45 AM, so he’s already asleep. The place he likes to eat lunch is a cash only joint, so I decided to run out and get him some money from the ATM.

I pulled into the parking lot at the bank. I was the only car there. I was digging out my card, when another car pulled in and parked right next to me, so close, in fact, I would have had trouble opening my door. I looked over at the other driver, a man, who stared at me for a moment, then peeled out in reverse, flying out of the lot.

I was taken aback, but went into the bank and got my cash. When I came out, the same thing happened, but with a different car!

I was standing on the sidewalk when she pulled in next to my driver’s door, not as close, but still in the next stall. I figured she was just another late night ATM user, but no, she looked me in the eye, then peeled out too like her ass was on fire.

Is it my breath?

I was driving a Corvette convertible with the top down, so if they were there to meet someone, wouldn’t they realize I wasn’t who they were expecting sooner?

Were the two out to meet each other?

Is there some (literally) backwards racing culture that hangs out in your bank parking lot after hours?

More seriously, perhaps they by and sell drugs there, and got scared when it wasn’t who they thought it was?

Hey, I like that idea. I’ve seen such things happen nearby. Nowadays they often keep in close cell phone contact right up to the meeting, but maybe the connection was pre-arranged. At least they were not there to do great bodily harm or phish the ATM number.

Sounds to me like the two were meeting each other. Probably both married, so when each saw that the person in the other car wasn’t who they expected, they hightailed it out of there.

I didn’t think of that. I thought maybe drug deal, since the ATM is in an area in the early phases of gentrification.

It scared me a little, since I was getting cash. Believe me, if they asked, I would have handed over the $20.00.

The drug deal hypothesis seems unlikely to me, if only for the simply fact that ATMs have cameras in them. Yeah, the camera doesn’t have a great field of vision, and it would be relatively easy to do the deal in a corner of the lot out of its sight, but why take the chance, when there’s any number of other perfectly empty parking lots that aren’t right next to a surveillance camera.

I have no idea what was going on, but I do think that the second your spider sense started tingling, you should have driven away.

#1) Thieves and robbers like to target ATMs, especially in sparsely populated areas, for obvious reasons, and especially at night. (Though my friend’s car was broken into in broad daylight right after she’d cashed a large check at the bank. The police theorize that the thief followed her from the bank.)

#2) Driving around in a convertible with the top down at 11pm is also something that I’d think twice about.

#3) After the first car pulled in and blocked me from getting out of my car, I’d have skedaddled out of there.

Spidy sense didn’t rise until I was out of the bank, when the second car arrived… I just thought the first car was a curiouity.

  1. I didn’t get scared until the second car, after I’d already been inside

  2. I live in Seattle, when it’s warm enough to have the top down, it’s down.

3, The first car came and went so quickly, I couldn’t have left before him if I wanted. Once he was gone, I could see the whole parking lot, so I saw no immediate danger.
I’m not easily frightened.

Perhaps the hoodlums just wanted to bask in the starry sky and get some moon on their faces? (esp if the nights have been overcast lately)

Or better yet, I just don’t know and you’re right it does sound suspicious.

I like the cheating couple theory best. Either your being there scared them or it was a case of mistaken identity. Glad to hear you had no more trouble.

Bri2k

Is it a 2000 Corvette? Because that happens to them a lot.

But wouldn’t both people, if it was a cheating couple, know what car to expect the other person in? It seems odd to assume that that must be one’s partner in that unfamiliar Corvette.

My own theory is that the OP unknowingly had a really gross booger on her face, such that she frightened away two separate customers from the ATM.

Cheating couple, first time hook-up for NSA sex via Craigslist? Message exchange includes “I’ll park in the corner of the bank lot to meet you” without detail on the car type (or with forgotten detail and assumption that must be the car).

Guy pulls in: OMG she must have sent me an older picture/someone else’s picture!
Gal pulls in: OMG his wife intercepted the message and wants to kick my ass!

Is your husband selling drugs from your car? The customers see the car, pull in to make a purchase, see it isn’t the husband, then freak out and split?

I thought either cheating couple or an area that is common for prostitution at night. I used to live near a church and it wasn’t uncommon for the parking lot to be used by prostitutes in the evening.

I’d report it to the police non-emergency line so they can keep an eye on it. That all sounds too weird to me.

If it was a cheating couple, why would they pull up so close? Also, why did they peel out? Wouldn’t they just reverse out normally? Well, maybe a woman thinking the guy’s wife was in the car would, but both?

If they were just parking I would understand. In nearly empty parking lots people will often park right next to the only car there. Safety in numbers or something, I guess.

But backing out like that is bizarre.

picunurse–are you a minority member?

That could explain it.

Minority Member + ATM + Bigotry = 0 to 99 in 3 seconds flat.
