What kind of bird is this?

I’ve been keep seed on my window sill for these little neighborhood birds. What are they?

Green morph pine siskin? A big one, judging by the scale of the seeds.

Where are you?

Looks goldfinchy to me, but I’m sure Colibri or one of our other birding enthusiasts will be along soon enough to tell us for sure.

Upper Palatinate, Germany.

I’m not sure, since I am traveling and don’t have my European field guides at hand. However, I don’t think it’s a Pine Siskin since it has a yellow rump (which the siskin lacks) and doesn’t have enough yellow in the wing.

The photo is very dark and taken from above, which also makes it harder to identify.

European Greenfinch?

Mushroom hunters talk about LBMs (little brown mushrooms).

Is there a similar bird category?

Yup, looks like a greenfinch to me.

LBJ (“Little Brown Job”) for me, some just go with LBB

Heh, cool.

LGB’s are also common. “Little Grey Birds”

Not sure if this makes it any clearer, but here is a quick video.

Looks like either a Greenfinch or a Common Chaffinch.

Pretty sure it is a greenfinch. Defintely not a goldfinch. They are my favourite bird and they are adorable.

Yeah, I first I though goldfinch with winter plumage but being based where you are I’d go with greenfinch.

I think it’s definitely the Greenfinch. Funny you mention the Chaffinch, because I’ve been wondering about the other group of birds that have been eating as well. Now I have names for all three of the bird varieties that have been eating my seeds, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, and Thrushes (Eurasian Blackbirds).

Thanks, everyone.

Wow! You Brits have much fancier goldfinches than we do. To add insult to injury, our finches don’t even come in green.

Well, Lesser Goldfinchs can get kinda olive green in my area. But the European versions are definitely a bit brighter ;).
