It’s going well, now. At first she was pretty stand-offish, and I had some serious doubts about wanting to keep her. I was like, “Man, did we get a dog so I’ll have to take care of and pay for some pet who doesn’t even want to be around me?” She did finally warm up to us, but it took probably about six weeks. I am astonished at how perfectly behaved she is in the house. We can leave her uncrated, and leave the trash can uncovered, shoes on the floor, electrical cords in plain sight, bad of food on the floor – and she won’t touch any of it. Outdoors she’s not as perfect, we have to buy a gentle lead since she tugs on her leash and she keeps biting through her gentle leads.
I think I can actually pinpoint the moment I fell in love with her. I was lying on the couch napping, and I had a nightmare. When I woke up, she was sitting in front of the couch, facing outwards, standing guard over me. It was such a comfort to wake up to that.
I thought the same thing of my Vaya. Just throw some white splotches on the muzzle and chest, a bit longer snout, and take about 5 pounds of muscle off, and they’re eerily similar.
May her tail wag forever, and your home be full of doggy-inspired happiness.
I’m so happy for you and Libby! Thanks for the update. She’s gorgeous.
I’m so happy for you and your whole family! Libby has such a sweet face! May you have many years of love together.
Just saw the update, and Libby is adorable! FYI, the gentle leader is not for everyone, Bear hated his and still has a scar on his nose from fighting it off. He’s a puller and I’ve tried a bunch of different harnesses on him and so far the Walk Your Dog With Love front pull harness has given me the most success with him. He has that slender, deep chested build that makes most harnesses slide right off if he backs up with intent but this one stays on.
My first answer will always be “rescue”, but I am REALLY into flat-faced breeds. They have sweet temperaments. The first and only dog I’ve ever had was a pug and she was so gentle and very well-behaved.
Rat terrier…willful…sweet…smart…low maintenance
Good looking dog. Good luck. Glad she is not damaging anything inside. We had a dog that never warmed up to us. When she started causing other problems, we got rid of her. The outside behavior will come, but not immediately and without countless repetitions on your part informing her what you expect/demand. IMO, at 2, she hasn’t gotten all of her “brains” yet.
