What kind of hat is this?

It’s yet another one of my “what kind of hat is this?” threads. Don’t you just love it? Here is the hat in question. It’s being worn by John III of Sweden, 1537-1592, to give a time frame for it. It looks kind of like a giant, ribbed fez with a round brim. What is the official name for this sort of hat?

I’d call it a capotain, except they generally had a wider brim. All the costuming sites just call it a “tall hat.”

Or maybe a “sugarloaf.”

“Sugarloaf” seems closest, as it lacks the typical capotain floppy brim. The asymmetrical slant looks like the form called “Burgundian”, as shown in some of the images on this site.

Can’t answer the OP’s question, but just wanted to point out that John III sure pulls off wearing it in style.

Lampshade.

It’s a tasselless fez.
