What kind of person hopes to maim a child?

All right, now I’ve heard everything. As of today, authorities have found razor blades planted on playground equipment in 8 parks in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, CA.

What the hell? Some fuckwit puts razor blades on play equipment in the hopes that some kid will land on them or grab them? You have got to be kidding. I’m so shocked that I can’t even get a good rant going.

But for form’s sake- shit fuck bastard cunt cocksucker dammit.

Seriously, I can’t believe that even a sicko would do this. I thought that sickos generally wanted to be involved in their hideous acts on children. Does this mean that this wack job is sitting somewhere near a park every day, waiting for the right moment when a kid starts screaming in pain and terror? For what it’s worth, no injuries have been reported, and parents are now scouring the places where their children play, as are schools.

I don’t know about other areas, but this seems especially shocking in cocoon-like Newport Beach. Maybe that is part of this asshole’s point, although the thought that a sick fucker like this uses higher reasoning at all makes me ill.

No matter how jadede I become, some things will still be shocking. I will never get used to predators hunting children.

Not to belittle your outrage, and I’m not accusing anybody of anything here, but I have to say that this story smacks of Urban Legend. For the sake of humanity I hope it is.

Might you have a link to a newspaper article, or a police blotter or something to corroborate this. I would be interested in this as a legitimate story.

The point you make about “sickos generally want[ing] to be involved in their hideous acts” makes sense, which is why this seems like a possible UL to me.

I’m just saying …

I wish it were, Jack.

I don’t exactly remember how to post links, but here is the address of a story from the LA Times-

http://www.latimes.com/news/state/20010531/t000045486.html

It is also being reported on LA newsradio and smaller local papers.

Here is a better story from the Orange County Register-

http://ocregister.com/local/

I will work on my computer skills, I promise.

Well, doesn’t that just curdle my nose-hairs.

Fucking unbelievable!

It’s happening in playgrounds all over LA county.

The sickos don’t necessarily have to be watching. Reading about themselves in the paper or hearing about it on TV may be enough attention for them.

My local paper reported that children were being dosed with LSD from Blue Star stick-on temporary tattoos. It’s been reported in newspapers at TV news shows all over the country. I’ll give the razor story equal credence until actual evidence appears.

It was in the middle or late 1960s that this type of pervert reared his ugly head and changed a holiday forever. Someone started putting razor blades in Halloween apples and several kids got lacerated mouths. The sick bastard was never found so we could break his bones a lot.

The following year, other sick bastards who read the previous years news reports and thought they were cool, went further. Not only were razor blades out in Halloween fruit, but needles also, and were cooked into home made goodies. It did not stop there because some home made candies and easily opened commercial sweets were laced with drugs.

That ended the fun of Halloween as we used to know it, where we could wander friendly streets for hours, get bag after bag of great treats, get deliciously scared by the good folks who decorated their yards and turned their carports into mini horror sets, complete with sounds and costumed adults who gave out snacks and thrills at the same time.

Things are very different now and as far as I know, no one was ever caught for those inhuman acts. We figured, back then, that it was the druggies of the hippy set doing it because by then, the flower children had discovered more than pot and LSD and were turning into psychos.

, if I wasn’t afraid you were serious, I’d congratulate you on a terrific rif on the Hallowe’en UL.

Read carefully, please: It. Did. Not. Happen.

I was trick-ot-treating in the 1950s and we had the same rumors/ULs floating around, then. There have been a very few cases of tripped out people getting drugs into their own kids, but the razors-in-apples and the acid-in-tattoos or acid-in-chocolate stories are not true. They did not happen.

You are partially correct in that belief in those stories and the publicity whipped up by Adam’s dad following his (extremely rare) abduction by a stranger has caused numerous families to withdraw from Hallowe’en and numerous communities to plan parties to replace trick-or-treating. The trigger events for these familial and community decisions, however, are in the minds of the worried adults, not in the police blotters around the country.

BTW,

Bwahahaahaaahaahaahaahaa! Good one, there, too.

Sorry Chas. E, the best story was on the OC Register page, but the link was only to a section and the stories posted change daily, apparently.

Evidence (razor blades) has been collected at each site, including a park down the street from my church on Balboa Blvd in Newport, and from the playground on the property of Newport Harbor Lutheren Church.

If I can find a police database to link to as mentioned above, I will post it.

Suspect they weren’t planted but left.

The parks are likely used at night by drug sellers or users who leave their tools of the trade.

I stopped to use a pay phone outside a barber shop. This particular corner was evidently very popular as there were several people just hangin’ 'round. On top of the pay phone was a razor blade amidst a white residue.

I never snorted my coke off of a slide in a playground, but to each his own.

I am on the NBPD website now, looking at call logs to see if I can provide a link.

Damn, I don’t know how the call log would classify “razor blades on play equipment.” I suppose it could be either “suspicious circumstances” or “Misc hazard” but I’m not sure.

Uh…Tom, if you go to snopes, they say that this particular UL is true. http://www.snopes2.com/horrors/mayhem/needles.htm

It just occurred to me that this thread title could have been attributed to a JDT tirade.

elfkin477 and The70sMan74,
I obviously overstated my case on this one. I had based it on a study similar to (or, perhaps, an earlier version of the same study) as the one by Joel Best that snopes notes. At that time, there had been about 50 reports and all were deemed hoaxes. Now the Joel Best report says “most” of 80 reports are hoaxes.

Given the couple of particular incidents that occurred in the 1980s (and the number of occurrences that appear to be evidence “planted” by the purported victim), I would guess that after years of ULs, one or two twisted jerks decided to act out the story. A “few” cases in a country expanding from, 164,000,000 to 290,000,000 over a forty year span still does not indicate an epidemic of such activity.

From 1994 through to Michaela’s first birthday (1997) I lived right across the street from the second of the parks where this was reported (Pinkley Park, Costa Mesa). I first heard about it on a morning radio show with Danny Partridge, and thought, “better check snopes,” but when I opened the paper later that day, I found the story. Two days later, it was at my old stomping grounds (and the first park Michaela ever played in, did I mention that?) and my blood ran cold.

Who ever thought west Anaheim would turn out to be a step up from east side Costa Mesa?

At first read I thought you were just making a funny.
But then maybe I wasn’t explicit enough.

Not powder cocaine snorters but crack cocaine smokers. The Implement of Destruction must be small for concealment which neccesitates dividing the ‘rock’ into smaller volumes for consumption… This division is best done with a razor blade.
Also a razor blade is most useful for opening the packaging.

That’s for users, for sellers the razor blade would be used to divide the product into marketable quanities. Although prepackaging is the norm.

Back to the OP:
Has anyone been able to retrieve the Orange County Register article?
Were the razor blades planted or left? (Although leaving razor blades on a playground is no less worthy of a rant.)
What were the dynamics of the report? Did some parent (understandably concerned) report the find? Did the cops report that the razor blades were left in an obvious attempt to harm or did they find anything else such as sharply cut tiny plastic bags to indicate the reason for the razor blades?

[hijack]In Penn and Teller’s How to Play With Your Food, they give instructions for pretending to bring the razor-blade-in-an-apple fear to life.

Mix corn syrup with a bit of red food coloring to make stage blood.

Returning home after making the rounds, Sibling 1 announces their return to mom and dad, while Sibling 2 takes and holds a sip of the “blood”.

Sib 1: We had a great time! We even stopped at Scary Cat Lady’s/Grouchy Reclusive Guy’s house, and got these apples!

Mom/Dad: Oh no!!! We told you not to take apples from anyone! Give them here—

Sib 2 [staggering into room, “blood” dripping from hir mouth] AAAAAAGHHHHHH!

Mom/Dad: [clunk]
