What kind of professional do I need for this yard job?

When I moved into the manufactured home I live in, the landscape was already set up. Some bushes and a small garden bed in front, with a small tree as the centerpiece. Since then the place has become overrun with weeds, including two tall weeds growing up around the tree that, upon Google image searching I have discovered are not weeds at all, but black walnut trees. Maybe 6-7 feet tall but not very wide in diameter. I don’t think I’d better keep those there as they were not part of the plan originally.

I’ve also got a bunch of weeds and vines in my back yard. My gas (I think?) meter is buried in these tall rush looking grasses.

We’re talking a pretty small property size, maybe 300sq feet.

Is there any one professional who can handle all of this? Is this a landscaping job? Do I need a tree removal service or can a landscaper handle it?

So far I’m having a hard time getting anyone to come out and take a look. I was supposed to get help yesterday but they cancelled on me. But it would be helpful if I can tell someone exactly what I need.

Landscaper yes, could probably remove small trees, ever see any lawn service in your neighborhood? Pulling a trailer with lawn equipment? ask them about it. Or look for recs on social media.

What do you envision? A yard with grass and a flower bed? Some play space for the child? Do you own a lawnmower? Lol. we just weed whack paths through the asters and daisies, no lawn! But my township has no lawn ordinances.

There might be beneficial “weeds” already growing. Black walnuts should probably be removed in such a small yard.

how much are you willing to spend? It has to be worth their time to do business.

I’d just like to restore it to its original condition. The plants are all still there. The garden beds are still there.

No lawnmower. We pay to have someone mow our lawn but they do not do landscaping. We have good clear lawn space.

I’ll pay whatever it costs.

I guess I will find a landscaper.

I’ve hired a general handyman for this kind of job rather than an actual landscaper. Our neighborhood is lousy with guys with a truck and trailer who do a variety of outdoor jobs, so I just called the phone number on the side of a truck and got lucky. My guys have cut weeds, hauled large trash items from a garage clearout, and repaired a block wall. They aren’t specific professionals, but they do have a business license and insurance, so I’m fairly confident that they aren’t just hailing it down the road and dumping it in a vacant lot.

A neighbor might help you out with a name of someone trustworthy.

Those black walnuts were probably planted by squirrels! I have a black walnut tree in my front yard and occasionally I have to cut small trees out of my back yard beds. Those things grow quickly!

Any landscaper can do what you’re asking. I’d go with a landscaper over a general handyman because a landscaper will have a place to dump the brush that is cleared. And they’ll have all the right tools for getting the tree stumps/roots up out of the ground. And they’ll bring you mulch and lay it for you.

You might just need to wait until the end of the season to get anyone to come out. Not all lawn mower services are landscapers, but most landscapers do lawn mowing service because it’s a nice regular income. Or, if they don’t do lawn mowing service, they’re doing projects and they’re already booked for the summer.

From what you wrote, there’s nothing you need that can’t wait until fall. So I would wait for fall, or if there’s another dry spell where mowing isn’t happening that much, you could try contacting people then.

And if you still can’t get someone? Call in like, February to get on their books for spring.

Tell them you want to restore some existing beds. Don’t even mention the trees as a separate concern. Any landscaper will be able to pull out those trees.

Around here, the landscapers’ trucks/trailers always have their phone #s prominently displayed. What you describe is undoubtedly daunting to you, without the tools or experience. But it is not a very big job for anyone w/ a couple of the correct tools. Slash and burn!

Thank you, that explains why nobody is calling me back.

That’s reassuring!

Also I recently learned I need written permission from the owners of this place to remove trees. So that gives me something to do before Fall.

Just curious what people think a ‘landscaper’ is. Around here it’s a fancy name for guys who mow lawns and maybe clear light brush.

Any old landscaper should be able to do that kind of thing. Ours will do that kind of thing, grind stumps, build flower beds (out of stone, no less!), and generally do anything yard-related we ask them.

He and his crew will also do stuff like clean gutters and do heavier-duty landscaping like grading part of the yard, putting in paving stones, and a French drain.

Can’t hurt to ask- I’d call around to a few I see in the area, and see what they do and don’t do. They should also come out and give you an estimate.

The way I conceive it, a lawn service is what you describe. A landscaper is someone who may do lawn service as part of their offerings, but is also qualified to re-landscape a yard/area, including making beds, choosing plants, and so forth, as well as doing things like brush removal, finding tree removal people for you, and so forth.

What you’ll find, is these yard crews generally cost an arm and a leg to do what you want done. That’s why many people do it themselves insofar as practical. In my area we have a “free” yard waste site, but commercial lawn services outfits can’t use it. At least not without paying for it. Not sure how that works. If any sort of herbicide or weed control is necessary, they are unlikely to have the necessary permits to do that. But they will come in with a crew and clean everything up you need done quickly, the good ones have it down to a science.
