What kind of spam is this?

I’m talking about the computer kind.

OK, my SO must have clicked on “YES” on some security box while browsing for porn or something. She keeps getting an information box with ads on it. If she clicks ok, another half dozen ads show up. If she closes the box, it disappears only to show up later (I’m thinking it’s attached to something in Internet Explorer).

What program is this? I just spent 3 hours removing all spyware from her system. I can’t find this program! I even looked through her running applications while the message came up and couldn’t see anything. I unchecked some questionable programs on her start up and still no good.

Do I need to resintall 2K? Anyone else seen this before? She’s running NT 2K with all the patches. I’m running several anti-spyware programs (I don’t know which, I’m not there right now) and it’s still around. I’m thinking it might be some sort of cookie but I’m not sure.

Sounds kinda like Gator. Spybot will get rid of it, and so will Adaware.

Delete all cookies from her browser while you are at it.

Also, it’s important to update your antispyware software, just like your antivirus scanner. Make sure you’re running the latest version, because creators of spyware are always finding new ways to get in under the radar.

I used something else to remove all the spyware…took hours because she’s using an old 600 celeron. Still no good. I’ll try adware and see if that does anything.

The cookies will be deleted tonight. It’s weird because the ads come up even without IE running.

Do a search (Windows Key + F) on ‘save.exe’. Sounds like that to me.

Download Mozilla. It has built-in options for pop-up blocking. And it works, I never see pop-up ads anymore. Or, if you’re into the whole IE thing, grab a pop-up blocker add-on.
