What "local" artists get more than their fair share of radio time in your area?

I live near Detroit, and the one that comes to mind is Bob Seger. I hear his music on the radio a lot, and I’m certain it’s because he’s a hometown boy. Not that there is anything objectionable about him–it’s just that he’s not churning out hits anymore, so under normal circumstances I think he’d be a once-in-a-while artist I’d hear on the radio. As it is, I must hear his music every week.

Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent probably also get a little more airplay here than they would otherwise.

Other “local” artists I don’t notice so much. Madonna doesn’t feel local anymore; Kid Rock and Eminem are big enough that I don’t expect their airplay here is noticeably more than it is anywhere else.

Even though they aren’t local, BareNaked Ladies has always gotten a lot of airplay here. They were big along the border before they were big across the U.S., so I think places like Buffalo and Detroit feel some ownership.

And you?

I live near Detroit too, and I think our oldies station, WOMC, plays more than its fair share of Motown music.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Is “Lakeshore Drive” played outside the Chicago area? I’ve always wondered about that.

Yes, but not as often.

Nickelback, who came out of Vancouverm when they were huge and had a several hits out. It would be on both the alternative/old rock stations, the pop music station, and various tv music channels(not MTV, just stations with nothing on the screen but audio on the background). It was not unusual to have the videos of them being played on MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic whilst one of the radio stations would be playing it.

At least two times they released a song where it was no. 1 on all three stations and multiple songs of theirs would be on the top 30.

And they did bring upon us a wave of nu metal, and most of it was crap beyond mine eyes had ever seen(with a few exceptions).

Vancouver :smack:

Back in my old home town,

Boston. The city, the band. Their music was ok, but didn’t seem nearly good enough to justify the airtime WZLX always gave them.

The J. Geils Band also got a lot more airtime in Boston than in other cities, but I wouldn’t say they got more than their “fair share”.

Jack Johnson. At least twice a day, I’ll hear something of his on the radio.

In reference to the OP, I haven’t heard Kid Rock in months, if not longer, so any play he’s getting in Motor City is probably due to being a home-town hero.

Also Vancouver…
Brian Adams
Sara McLaughlin

Waaaaaay too much airplay and TV play and pictures on the cover of the local newspapers. That song of Adams’ that had the line “I’m ready” about 50 million times made it so I’d avoid any kind of public venue where I might here it. Once I got some strange looks walking through a video store with my fingers in my ears, humming so I wouldn’t hear that damn song.

Isn’t Michael Stanley a DJ on 98.5? I’ve never heard any stuff from his band except self-promotion. So that’s more of a station thing than a city thing.

So you’re saying his new single with Sheryl Crow, “Picture,” isn’t on every single station (Top 40, alternative, country, rock, new rock, adult contempo, lite rock) 4 times an hour there?
