Now that the Beatles have signed on, there only a few famous acts left that aren’t selling their music through iTunes. I know Bob Seger and AC/DC, because I’ve actually tried looking for their songs on the site. What are some others?
I read today that Kid Rock and Garth Brooks are both holdouts. I don’t know Kid Rock’s reasoning, but supposedly Garth Brooks thinks iTunes is killing the music industry. No idea what he means by that.
My understanding is that Kid Rock doesn’t care if you pirate his songs because he makes most of his money via touring/concerts.
There are some live bootlegs of Frank Zappa’s work, but none of his albums are available.
Still nothing available from Tool.
Last I checked I didn’t see anything from Andy Gibb.
Yeah, yeah, make your jokes.
He also doesn’t like used stores selling his CDs.
iTunes used to have the Zappa catalog, but it was withdrawn due to legal action by the Zappa Family Trust (i.e., widow Gail). Ironically, the ZFT has licensed some exclusive live Zappa material to iTunes (the AAAFNRAA* Bundles), which remains available.

Bob Seger. I guess you’ll have to keep takin’ those old records off the shelf.

Still can’t get T-Pain’s “Apple Bottom Jeans” on there.
Been checking for Pour Some Sugar On Me. Appears there is no Def Leppard.
King Crimson
Really? That almost made Kid Rock kinda cool in my mind.
There are various live albums, and his last three studio albums, but the major output of Captain Beefheart – “Safe as Milk,” “Trout Mask Replica,” “Lick My Decals Off, Baby,” “The Spotlight Kid,” etc., are nowhere to be seen.
If it makes a difference, there’s lots of Kid Rock on Rhapsody. Safe as Milk seems to be available there too. The rest of the bands mentioned above are absent there as well.
I don’t get iTunes when Rhapsody and Napster are around. I need to start a thread on why people choose.
Nothing by The Kinks prior to Muswell Hillbillies is on there. For my money those are their better albums.
WAG: Buy-as-you-go versus subscription. I keep cancelling/holding my emusic subscription because many months, I don’t actually buy any of their music but find what I’m looking for on iTunes. Some months, I don’t buy music from anyone.
Andy Gibb was on there as of a few years ago. Ask me how I know. (My favorite Andy Gibb song is “I’ll be waiting for you.” He has a sweet voice and I had a pre-teenage crush on him, so I can’t help but feel a little sad when the song comes on.
I, too, have searched to no avail with Bob Seger. It’s my understanding from the comments on Amazon that he’s in a dispute of some sort with his record label. So I’m not sure if it’s him who is holding out or if they just can’t untangle the legalese surrounding his recordings. Most artists in his position just re-record the music under their new label.
Not iTunes specificially, but I’m always been waiting for years for John Mellencamp to come out with a live album. I’m not a great fan of studio music and he puts on a great show.
Would an 8/12/82 show do anything for you? If you haven’t already, check out Wolfgang’s Vault. It’s a great source for free (legally free) and paid live performances. There’s a lot more there too. Worth a stop.
