The end of the Simpsons episode “Life on the Fast Lane” (the “Officer and a Gentleman” riff)
“King Gimp”
The end of “Schindler’s List” - my god, how manipulative and effective!
The end of “Cinema Paradiso”
The Dixie Chicks song “Goodbye Earl,” because I’m proud of the women in the song for killing the abusive husband, and I wish more abused women would do just that.
The Dido song “Thank You,” or whatever it’s called.
Yes, I have testicles. They’re somewhere around here…
The scene in Titanic where the mother is reading to her children as the boat sinks
Liebestrom (sp?)
The end of Dancer in the Dark
The “choice” scene in Sophie’s Choice
The scene in Requiem for a Dream when Ellen Burstyn talks about what it’s like to be old.
That damned commercial for the Humane Society with the dog chained out in the snow as the family enjoys Christmas in the warm house. Damn!!! That commercial had me weeping the first time I saw it. It made me hug my dog.
The part in The Neverending Story when Artax sinks into the Swamp of Sadness. When I was a kid, I had to fast-forward that scene. I couldn’t handle it.
The only exception to the “don’t cry in a movie” rule is the end of Rudy where he comes in for that one play and gets a sack.
hrhomer, that’s disgusting. You applaud murderers. Good for you. It wasn’t self-defense in that song, it was premeditated, he wasn’t in the midst of attacking her. She just poisoned his food. Allow me to suggest that going to the authorities is preferrable, and I think the people at the domestic violence centers would prefer that women did that rather than take the law into their own hands in a vindictive killing. I hate that f*cking song. If it’s just a metaphor for female empowerment, ok, but people who take it literally as advocating murdering people…that’s simply disgusting.
In “The Color Purple” where Miss Celie and Nettie reunite and Celie meets her African children
at random times when the cruel-ness of the world overtakes me
at random times when the beauty of the world and of this life overwhelms me
when I get so frustrated I can do nothing else but
always at the end of “The Shawshank Redemption” Hope springs eternal.
I cried reading the book “Seabiscuit” when the author is describing Seabiscuit’s final, most triumphant race. Talk about beauty and poetry in motion. I think I might go back and read that passage again this afternoon
Is anyone familiar with a song called “The Promise” by Tracy Chapman? God, I cry every time I hear it. I play it when I’m thinking of my mom (she died about 4 1/2 years ago). It just kills me.
Do you hate the song so much that you’ve never listened to it? She went to the authorities, got a restraining order, he ignored it, and beat her up so badly that she was sent to intensive care. Is a murder ONLY ONLY ONLY excusable if it’s done IN THE MIDST of a self-defensive act? I think not. The authorities had been given their chance and failed. Therefore, SHE HAD TO STOP THE BEATINGS.
I repeat, I wish more abused women would do the same.
The song Feed Jake… Don’t remember who sang it… I’ve only heard it two or three times in my life. The first time I was at a friend’s house and saw the video on CMT… The song asks the Jake (A dog) be taken care of… In the video, the person taking care of Jake takes him for a walk, which we end up seeing is in a cemetary. The song, apparently, is sung from the perspective of a person who has passed away and is talking to hid friend, asking him to take care of the dog. And damn… Just thinking about the video and the song makes me get teary eyed…
Nice Lloyd Alexander reference sciguy . I find songs more emotional than books or movies though.
I went to a Waitangi day concert yesterday during which the Feelers (a NZ band) played their song ‘Spaceman’ it was kind of emotional given Columbia, having a whole crowd singing ‘I’m coming down/Burning Up/Hit the ground/My head is spinning.’
Had to flick the sunnies down in case anyone saw water…
I’m a sucker for true heros (not shoot-em-up, Bruce Willis heros). Frodo saying “I’ll take the ring, though I do not know the way.” or the rank and file in “Ghandi” walking up to the salt plant, taking their whacks and falling down.
Also, anyone who does (or at least attempts) the impossible: Read “The Man Who Walked Home.” Or “Sancho, my armor!” in Man of La Mancha (and also un the Niven/Pournelle novel “Footfall”). Or the king’s son in “The Gods Must be Crazy” who walks to the end of the earth.
Maggie saying her first word in The Simpsons.
The final shot of the episode where we learn why there are no pictures of Maggie in the family album.
Homer sitting on the hood of his car looking up into the sky thinking about his mom.
I’m sure there are more from the Simpsons that I’m not thinking of.
For some reason, the part in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (movie) where Harry looks into the mirror and sees his parents there.
