What makes you feel good? Sandy Nelson and tomato soup.

This is what I did on my day off today. It was freezing outside but the sun was shining in every window. So I topped off the bird feeders, put on some Sandy Nelson and made homemade tomato soup (recipe below) and some vicious Carribean black bean dip. Then I had lunch in the sunbeam and leafed through all my new seed catalogs.

1 qt seeded tomatoes- do not drain
1 small onion and 3 or 4 big garlic cloves- roasted in olive oil
2 or 3 sundried tomatoes in oil
garnish with cracked pepper and basil

(add a can of tomato paste if not rich enough for ya)

Whirl all in a blender then simmer until Let There Be Drums, Teen Beat, and Cool Operator (cowbell!) have played. Eat and plan your garden.

So…what do you guys do that feels gooood?

Go on with all that, Beaucarnea, 'cept I don’t know at all who Sandy Nelson is, at all, so do tell.

'Mater soup is so good now, too, I live by it with some rice added, Yesterday was my day off, and tried to get some things done, but really enjoyed laying off and watching PBS Masterpiece Theatre of Elizabeth 1," Virgin Queen" TV is nice , sometimes. Then had to deal with all the historicals, and learning a bit, and now realize that the British Crown is horrid and barbaric, and comparing it to the current American scene. Queen Liz 1 was something, though.

Yikes. Well, currentshits be what they be. Same old power brokers.

Then, reading a very good book, “Composing A Life”, by Mary Catherine Bateson, daughter of Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, as much royalty of mind as Miss Queen Eliz 1… good book about delinieating life as a strong woman… well, here:

“Offers nothing less than a radical rethinking of achievement” San Francisco Chronicle.

The juxtaposition has been rewarding, and most serendipituous.

Tommorrow, a big batch of soup. With Drums. Heh.

Hi elelle! Sandy Nelson played drums on the 60’s surf song “Wipeout”. I don’t know if any of his solos ever got radio play- but his instrumental stuff will make you shimmy a little. And if no one’s looking- a little bump and grind. I found a video on YouTube with the song Teen Beat. I didn’t link to it- has some racy pin up stills. May not be safe for work.

I received Composing a Life as a Christmas gift this year from a family member who knows that I am planning a career change. I will take the book to bed tonight.

Looking at the cold, miserable weather outside, then turning over on the couch, finding my page in the book again, and snuggling into the pillows as a steaming mug sits on the coffee table nearby.

As a young drummer, I remember thinking Sandy Nelson was the hottest thing with a pair of sticks. Listening to him later, I realized he was pretty mediocre, but he was smart enough to realize there was a niche for his music. Once I heard Joe Morello, all others just faded into the background.

Right now, it’s 20 below zero. Burritos tonight made with pork marinated in chipotle to heat up the soul, and some jazz to soothe the tired brain.

Now how dang weird is THAT, Beaucarnea? This is an 18 year-old book. I got my copy used, and picked it out of the to read pile rather randomly last week.

Ya spook me, gal, I tell ya!

If you like the Venture’s style thing with hip-shake, check out Southern Culture On The Skids, one of my favorite bands.

When I have no writing to do and can just goof off?

A good book (not THE Good Book), curled up in bed under the quilt.

A good mug of hot, dark tea.

Some cyclobenzapr washed down with codiene.

And a phone call to a friend I haven’t talked to in ages, like Peter Lawford or Joe DiMaggio, Jr.

I opened the book last night and found an inscription to my mother. Yep. Got re-gifted. Not that I mind, I’m all about recycling, but Mom didn’t have to wrap it.

I just put a couple Southern Culture songs on my Ipod. They sound like they would be fun live. Kind of reminds me of Hayseed Dixie. If you ever see HD on any local venues, take friends and go on an anthropological muscial adventure. Not much funnier than a mosh pit full of rockabilly hipsters flatfooting while pumping fists. (For those of you not familiar- Hayseed Dixie is a bluegrass band that covers AC/DC and other hard rock songs. High-larious.)

Eve, that is awesome. Who has the best telephone voice?

Oh, Peter. He said goodbye to the President for me, and goodbye to himself, too, 'cause he was a nice guy.
