Maybe I’m too young to remember or maybe I wasn’t paying attention, either way, I have no idea what story inspired Cheats. Can anyone fill me in or link me to the story?

is this the movie you’re referring to? Halfway down the page it mentions that it’s based on Andrew Gurland’s own experiences in high school.
I didn’t know Cheats was based on any previous work.
BTW, its an excellent movie. Should’ve been released in theatres, IMO.
