Whether its because its a girly film and you don’t want them to know about it, or because its super dark (Clockwork Orange), or even if its just too deep and you think they will fall asleep halfway through (Tree of Life), what films are you scared to show to your friends?
Fantasia - Since I made my living for a number of years as a sportswriter and then as a sports editor and newspaper editor, many of my friends are hard bitten sportswriters, journalists, authors and professional athletes. I love this film and for that reason I do not want to hear the catcalls and hoots of derision from my friends about it.
Is it possible for Harmony Korine to make a normal movie? I mean, between this and Kids and something called Trash Humpers, this dude is a real piece of work.
The 1986 animated Transformers movie. I don’t want to hear the inevitable snark while watching it.
I have a wing of my DVD collection that I call the “WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?” wing. It contains the worst of the worst horror movies. Stuff like:
August Underground and its sequels, numbered and signed.
Philosophy of a Knife
Slaughtered Vomit Dolls
And so forth.
I like Sweeney Todd and have a copy on disc, but most folks I know wouldn’t care to put up with it. I did manage to convert the kids, though!
I guess mine is kind of mild by comparison. I Heart Huckabees, a strange comedy about existentialism. It’s my favorite movie of all time because it very much reflects my life philosophy and my own struggle to create meaning from suffering. But it’s a very weird movie, the kind that a lot of people don’t ‘‘get.’’ And, I can’t really blame them. But it’s still my favorite movie.
That video the Mrs. and I made?
Barry Lyndon because it’s boring (I still love it though)
Happiness. Oldboy. Good movies but would scare off most friends.
Babette’s Feast hasn’t ever gone down well with other people, though it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
Back in my roaring single days I held a dinner party/screening of The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover. Nobody walked out, but people were warned to read up on it first. No, we didn’t eat and watch at the same time.
Mr and Mrs. Qadgop
Extremely disturbing but very humorous. I can’t stop watching.
Yeah, I would put both of those on my list, too, probably.
The movie I’m most skittish about showing other people is Round Midnight, because it’s my favorite movie of all time, and I always worry that it’s going to fall on deaf ears.
The Secretary
Too kinky for most of my friends
I think David O. Russell is a good director, but count me among the people that didn’t “get” I Heart Huckabees.
Speaking of Russell, though, Spanking The Monkey might fall into the category of movies I might not want to show my friends.
Into what?
The worst pies in London?
I first saw this when I was pretty little and my question afterward was “How much did they have to pay Ryan O’Neal to cut off his leg?”

Err, yes… We made the movies, and getting paid was sufficient. Nope. Not showing those to anyone, although one guy I used to work with recognized me on the shelf at the video store. No idea if he saw or rented it. We haven’t even watched them, despite the director/producer giving us a set of all the titles for a wedding gift.
