Hero is one of my favorite films, even though it’s ultimate “message” is an apology for totalitarianism. I can love a move despite disagreeing with the “truth” of its universe.
Yes, exactly.
A buddy came over yesterday evening, and we watched Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS. I wouldn’t show that movie to just anyone…
I’m a big fan of Martyrs but I’m a little afraid to endorse it to my friends (even though a couple of them really like violent movies).
I love this movie. My dad and I used to watch it. He had the greatest twisted sense of humor. I don’t think I’ve shown it to any of my friends, but I did show it to Suburban Plankton before we got married. He didn’t love it, but he appreciated it.
I grew up on that movie and am still a big Transformers fan, so it still holds a special place in my heart. I know it’s a crap movie by objective standards, but I love the 80s soundtrack and voice lineup and general mix of cornyness with the occasional good line or awesome moment.
Needless to say, one of my friends found it so dull they fell asleep while watching it. Not breaking that one out again…
Anyways, I love to show Oldboy to people but I also find that there are several friends who I won’t show it to because they won’t “get”/appreciate it and just think I’m all sorts of messed up in the head.
No one forgets the day they saw Gummo, I’m now running off to watch these other two.
The rape scene in that movie combined with the background music is just so…unsettling, to say the least.
I really like 70’s sci-fi - Planet of the Apes, Logan’s Run, even Zardoz, but this gem is one my absolute favorite movies. It’s deliciously weird, slow-paced and unlike anything else out there. I watch it at least once a year. The music is great - I jokingly call it the best of Pink Floyd’s movies. There’s some non-sexual cartoon nudity (didn’t stop it from getting “Best Film” at the 1973 Teheran Film Festival :D), but I think that’s minor, compared to the “WTF is this?” reaction I’d expect if I were to force this movie on someone. But if you’re looking for a good Sunday hung-over movie, I can’t recommend it to you all any higher!
I first saw this on Night Flight in the 80s and picked up a copy a few years back. It stuck with me that long.
I’m going to need you to take that back.
I think I first read about it in Famous Monsters of Filmland in the late 1970s & was delighted when they showed it on Night Flight!
All the ones I’d normally be scared to show people, I have shown people-
Videodrome
Naked Lunch
A Clockwork Orange
Blue Velvet
Wild At Heart
Eraserhead
ReAnimator & Bride of
Now, I did get a little crap for the Eraserhead showing to the Church Singles & I heard that my friend who headed up the group got some negative feedback for showing Harold and Maude.
I once recommended Brazil to my mother. She doesn’t ask me for movie recommendations anymore.
After many attempts at trying to get friends to like my “acquired taste” martial arts movies, I just enjoy them now in my own company.
Stuff like The Swordsman Trilogy, the Baby Cart series, Blade, Bride with White Hair, and such.
The friends I watch movies with have fairly extreme tastes. I took them to Oldboy, and they loved it, for example. We watch all of the Japanese horror movies, and old Grindhouse style flicks, and are huge fans of the Alien series.
However, I made them watch Prometheus a few weeks ago, and to a person, they all hated it. I like the movie, even with the inconsistencies and silliness.
I would like to have them watch Hedwig and the Angry Inch (mentioned above), but I don’t think I could handle the jokes at my expense. What a great movie.
From my collection…
Mulholland Drive
Wild, Wild Planet
Eraserhead
Last Exit To Brooklyn
60s era lesbian vampire flicks
60s era sexploitation B movies
Anything in black and white or with subtitles
