I am going to burn a CD of music for the treadmill, but I need some suggestions.
What kind of music gets you moving? I have weird taste in music.
I love Jellyfish, but it doesn’t get me motivated.
So far I have:
Shakira (sp ?) Desperation Tango
Jet (Are you going to be my girl)
Rainbow - Since you’ve been gone
Any fast Foo Fighters song, which is a good 50% or more of their songs. Particularly Monkey Wrench, by the end of that song I am wide awake and can do anything!
Haunted by Evanescence. It just feels self-empowering, both rhythmically and lyrically.
I can think of lots of songs that make you wanna move. I’ll skip the obvious stuff–like, common American pop or hip-hop that’s gotten a lot of airplay recently–and try to recommend only those songs or CDs that might not come to mind quite as quickly.
Okay, so sometimes I like a little disco camp-o-rama. A friend left a copy of her Divas of Dance CD here a while ago, and I’ve been playing it on and off. The CD has stuff like “I Will Survive,” “It’s Got To Be Real,” and “Last Dance.” Lots of fluffy fun to be had, especially if you hang out in–or feel nostalgic for–clubs that like to play that stuff.
Elvis Crespo’s “Luna Llena” y “Sonrisa.” It’s hard to sit still for those.
Ozomatli’s “Eva.”
OK–I don’t know where you live, so this might be hard to come by, but see if you can find a CD called Radio SAMBA by Nacao Zumbi.
Fernanda Abreu’s Urbano Canibal also has some nice fast-paced tracks. “Fatos e Fotos” and “Sou da cidade” should get you going, if nothing else does. Now that I think of it, so should “Zona Norte, Zona Sul” and “Sao Paolo S.P.”
See what you can find from Youssou N’Dour. (My spelling might be wrong.) I got to go to one of his concerts in October, and we were all dancing in the aisles by the end.
“Florecita Rockera,” by Aterciopelados.
The dance stuff on the soundtrack from Monsoon Wedding.
Any really rousing, kick-up-your heels, fast-pickin’ bluegrass.
Pull-out-the-stops Dixieland.
Oh, yeah–the original Glen Miller version of “Sing, Sing, Sing With a Swing.”
“It Don’t Mean A Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing.”
“Adelita,” by Jorge Ben Jor. Actually, he’s got a lot of pretty good, get-up-and-dance songs. You might want to look him up under “Jorge Ben,” since that’s the name he used early on in his career.
“Neutron Dance,” by the Pointer Sisters.
“Frankly, Mr. Shankley,” by The Smiths.
There’s an absolute ton of hip-hop out there that would give you a good, driving beat and an engrossing melody to run to.
Metallica- Fuel
Green Day- Basket Case
Lifehouse- Spin
Stone Temple Pilots-Interstate Love Song
U2-Sunday Bloody Sunday
Aerosmith-F.I.N.E. (or, anything, really…)
Current fave: Dance Dance Revolution Extreme Nonstop Megamix – 60 minutes of uninterrupted remixed DDR goodness. Not recommended while driving, as it will cause excessive speeding…
God yes. I went on a lark to a performance by Ricky Skaggs at UMD’s Performing Arts Center. Sat next to this wonderfully cute old couple, and we were all exhausted clapping along and cheering to Ricky by the show’s finish; yet at the same time, nobody in the concert hall wanted it to end. It was musical Red Bull.
Pretty much anything off of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ *By The Way * album. I usually play it while on the treadmill. Pearl Jam’s *Ten * is also good.
If you like Shakira’s Objection, then you’ll like Eyes Like Yours/Ojos Asi, also by her. It’s got Saharan/Eastern beats to it and is the best song off that album, IMHO.
The Spanish version of Objection and Whenever, Wherever are waaay better than their English counterparts, too. They’re respectively called Te Aviso, Te Anuncio and Suerte. See? Even the titles are better.
