What musical instrument do you wish you could play?

I’d be happy to learn any instrument. I took one course on Music in college. It was basically the different scales and notes and stuff. And I failed it. It utterly eludes me. To be able to learn a instrument and actually understand all that would be awesome.

Sax - it is my favorite instrument to listen to. Actually I would be tickled if I could play anything worth a toot.

The violin. I have a soft spot for stringed instruments. The guitar is too ubiquitous, the cello too unwieldly… But the violin’s just right.

The Piano!

Drums or Bass Guitar.

The oboe. It just seems to have the right voice for me. One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard was a jam between an acoustic guitarist and an oboe player.

All you guys who want to learn piano: Just go do it!

I always wanted to learn piano. Then a year ago I got off my ass and bought a 61 key keyboard, just to play around with. Then I signed up for piano lessons, and took four months of them. Now I can play a handful of songs like Minuet in G and Fur Elise, along with some simpler pop songs like Desperado or Let it Be. It’s great fun.

Now I’ve outgrown the keyboard, and I’m looking for a reasonably good used digital piano with good weighted keys and all that, and once I get one I’m going to sign up for more lessons.

You’re never too old to learn. Just go do it.

Piano as well. I can bang out a few songs on a guitar, but I wish I could play the piano. I’d like to be that guy who sees a piano sitting unused in a bar, goes and plays some terrific song that sets all hearts a-flutter, then goes back to his beer.

That’s cooooool.

Wow, we sure have a lot of people here suffering from pianist envy!

Sorry. You wouldn’t believe how long it’s been since the last time I managed to use that pun in conversation. Anyway…

Cello. I played trombone for years, and much of the more challenging music for trombone is actually re-scored cello music. Listening to recordings of the music I was studying made me wish I could play that too.

Drums. I’ve always liked listening to the rythym patterns they play in band, and even after I forget the name of the song or what my part was, I can remember bits of what the percussionists played. Only problem is, I suck at putting rythyms written on paper into what they’re actually supposed to sound like. Ah well.

I’d like to play saxophone, just because they sound nice. Or trumpet.

I already play flute and piano, though. And I sing. So you’d think I have enough ways of making music. But no, there are those three more I’d still like to learn.
And for all those who want to learn piano: Go. Find yourself a piano teacher. Learn. And if youdon’t like the idea of a piano teacher, go buy yourself a book from Herter’s or wherever, and teach yourself. It’s worth the time.

Well, I already play piano and guitar. I’m not sure whether I can still count saxophone, as I haven’t picked it up in years.

I’d love to learn to play some older style instruments that aren’t as common any more – like renaissance and medieval era instruments.

Would love to learn to play the wood flute – played well, they sound hauntingly beautiful.

Hmm, if you don’t have levers on the harp, you may not have a Pakistani harp. They come with levers (usually, I think), though folks say the levers aren’t good quality. (I have no personal experience with these harps – I’m just relating what I’ve read on the Harplist.)

Anyway, yes, it should be possible to install levers on the harp. Robinson’s should also sell levers and may be able to give you advice on installing them. I’m guessing it’s a nylon stringed harp, rather than a metal-stringed harp? As long as you have room between the tuning pin/bridge pin and the bottom of the neck, you should be able to put some on. You do have to have the right size lever for the size of string you have and a few other factors.

BTW, I Am Not A Harp Technician; I just have 5 small harps of various types sitting around the house.

The Anglo concertina; Irish jigs, hornpipes, and reels, that sort of thing. Easy to carry, pretty loud, fairly unusual.

Guitar. I play viola but it isn’t really the type of insturment that one can WOW friends with on an idle evening.

I was a classical violinist many years ago. I loved it.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to learn guitar. I finally bought one late last year and am slowly teaching myself. I can only echo the sentiment that has already been brought up in this thread… if you want to learn an instrument, JUST DO IT! You won’t regret it, I guarantee!

Max.

I wish I could play the violin, but it isn’t gonna happen. (My ears aren’t nearly good enough.) I do play the drums, piano, bass guitar, and kindof sortof play the guitar (I play a bunch of bar chords) I love them all.

I wouldn’t mind learning the sax, either.

Persian zarb, a drum similar to a doumbek, but all wood with a slightly looser, thicker skin head. It is played in a very textural, finger-rolling style. Sometimes the player wears rings on some of their fingers, and runs them along the washboard-like ridges on the side of the body. Not too different from the Turkish/Egyptian style I now play, just a lot more intricate with different technique.

Turkish Nay. An endblown cane flute left to me by a dear friend who had to return to Greece for immigration reasons. Odd technique and ambichure. A very ethereal sound used in Sufi and folk music from North Africa to Turkey.

Any string instrument (violin, guitar, harp…). That’s the only family I have no experience with…and everytime I try to play a bowed or picked instrument, I can never get anywhere. i absolutely suck at fretting (both left and right handed)…so instead I always move on and get a new brass/wind/percussion instrument.

I wish I could play guitar…

The piano

The violin

I think it would be neat to play the harmonica, bass guitar, or the cello.
