I’ll be in the are for one night soon and won’t have time for multiple city searches- what city has the most/best ones?
I haven’t been there for a while but it was Asbury Park. They have recently tried to revitalize but there has been some setbacks.
I will second Loach’s vote for Asbury Park. Last spring I did my Architectural Preservation project on the current state of development in Asbury Park and it was quite grim. Although, they have since demolishedthis condo treasure, there are still plenty of buildings for you to check out. Taking a look at what Asbury Park used to be like will help you to understand how severe the current levels of abandonment are.
Ummm…Wee?
You need to borrow a few bucks for a motel? :dubious:
Funny!
The Robert De Niro crapfest City by the Sea had some really cool looking ones and it was filmed in Asbury Park- I didn’t know if those were the best, or if there were better ones out there…
I’m not a shore expert, I have my favorite spots and thats it. But for the most part you would find it hard to find another shore community that is run down like Asbury Park. For the most part it is prime real estate. I think the only reason Asbury has not rebounded back is because it fell so far.
Um, am I understanding correctly? You actually want to find the most run-down oceanfront city? Why? Looking for the cheapest beach?
For what it’s worth, Asbury Park was the first place I thought of, too.
Me too.
You realize you have to tell us why you want to know, right?
Doing a little UrbEx? I’m envious, if that’s the case.
Sorry for not being clear, yes, I’m a big fan of abandoned buildings.
Oh, good!
And here I was, thinking you were looking for a place to hide from Batman, whilst launching a frolicsome crime spree.
My bad.
As a big fan of the film Carnival of Souls, I’m relieved you’re not scouting locations for a 'Jersey-based remake.

It is still Asbury Park. Head down toOcean Ave and you will find some nice wrecks still. While you are there you can visit the Stone Pony, made famous by Bruce and Bon Jovi among others.
Why are you in for just one day? Seems odd? Is this abandoned building thing a project or a hobby?
Jim
Funny that Asbury Park seems to be the perennial favorite. I was gonna post that, but moved away from NJ back in '94, so I figured there was a good chance that things had changed.
For a bit of contrast, you might go one town over to Ocean Grove and take a gander at their “gingerbread” houses. While I’m not one to gush, they’re pretty adorable.
It is getting better, the town is recovering at long last. In another 10 years, you won’t be able to touch anything on Ocean Ave. What was very cheap just 7 years ago has gone up a lot.
I have a friend that was looking at a big old run down Victorian near the Ocean for only $125,000 and now the same place is in the $375,000 range.
I loved it as a little kid, riding in the Ferris Wheel at night that limbed out of the building into the night air, revealing the busy boardwalk and the glittering Ocean view. It was the Palace Amusements that Tilly was on. The building is gone now. That was probably the most famous ruin in Asbury.
The Boardwalk is probably going to get fixed up in the next few years.
Jim
I might as well ask. Wee Bairn, what day will you be in? This is basically my neck of the woods.
I don’t have an exact date yet, but real soon I need to pay my elderly nan in Flushing Meadows a visit before she kicks the bucket, and since my job is really shortstaffed at the moment I was going to try and fit the two into the same Friday night through Sunday, when I can find a good price on a ticket, but if the abandoned sites are really plentiful, maybe I should wait until I can spend a few days?
Oh and the abandoned buildings thing is just for personal enjoyment, like some would go to Disneyland
I don’t know if you need a few days. Unless you are actually planning to sneak into the building. ![]()
Here is the most impressive decaying building I think.
Nah, no sneaking in, just walking/driving by the facades a bit will be plenty, plus a night in a safe but antiquated hotel that hasn’t been renovated to complete the experience.
Really? Last I was there, it was sort of falling into the ocean, but I didn’t know they took it down. Ah, a part of my past that’ll now only be in pictures and my memories…
