I did temp work at Microsoft a few years ago testing Xbox 360 games. That’s a good example of a type of job where you need a lot of people for just a couple weeks.

How is that useless? That’s the point. Indeed aggregates want ads and other online job boards into one place.
It’s not like there is some secret job search web site that only has jobs that fit you.
You should call every week so you stay on their radar. You aren’t their only candidate and they have other things to worry about than you finding a job. By calling just enough to not be a pest, when a job fitting your background comes in, they will remember that you are a fit for it, as opposed to digging through hundreds of other people’s resumes.
