I’ve only seen it once, just a few years ago. I remember it being very good, with the “horror” being low-key and subtle. Not a scream and spill your popcorn movie.
Not sure I’d call it a thriller, maybe a second viewing would refresh my impressions. Although The Sex Scene was scandalous for its time (did they or didn’t they?), not so much nowdays. Not that I’d be yawning and looking at my watch if I were to see it again.
Just my opinions. I was going to recommend it had no one beat me to it.
Well…last time I watched it I was maybe eleven. That may have colored my recall and it is remotely possible I’d react that same as you if I saw it today ;).
If you watch this movie, which is for all purposes a *terrible *movie, listen to the commentary track. The commentary by HG Lewis is perhaps the most interesting commentary I’ve ever listened to. And I’ve listened to a lot of commentaries.
If they don’t mind subtitles, The Orphanage from 2007 is very good, as is Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone. I’m assuming you’ve all seen Pan’s Labyrinth, but if not, make that your first option ahead of TDB.
That bit from Freaks was referenced in The Wolf of Wall Street. My husband and I were the only ones laughing. I don’t think anyone else got it.
Well, I poured over this list with one of my friends and we decided upon a double feature. We’ll be watching “Burnt Offerings” and “Black Sunday.” When I mentioned that one to my friend, he flipped at the mention of it. (Apparently he saw it as young’un back in the 60s and it left a lasting impression.)
Thanks Slithy Tove for mentioning it. And thanks to everybody for their suggestions. After looking at some of the titles, we almost decided to just go for it and have a marathon horror festival. But two’s about all we can work in. We’ll keep this thread handy for future movie parties. And please feel free to suggest more - my netflix queue is empty at the moment!
Exorcist 3 is incredibly scary. If one isn’t familiar with it, one might dismiss it because it’s the third in a series coming after the bad Exorcist 2. But it’s damn good.
That isn’t even nearly the scariest part of the film, either (and I don’t mean realizing that most of the actors were playing themselves, showing what they did in the circus every day of their lives).
Well, in fairness he said he would watch it. But we haven’t heard back from him since. It would be ironic if he and his friends were murdered one by one during the horror-movie fest.
