What other fora do yous want to see?

Inspired by this thread, since I’ve seen requests for a politics forum before, and some people support a sports forum, although that seems to be only people who don’t want to see sports thread in the Game Room. What other forum ideas do you have?

Please don’t interpret this to mean new fora are coming, etc. etc. etc. I’m just wondering what else people would like to see.

I think this all comes down to one of two choices. Do you want a message board with the minimum number of fora, thereby having a wide variety of subjects crammed under a few fora names, or a message board with many fora, with sub-fora, child fora, spin-offs - and individual homes for everyone.

I quite like the idea of never really knowing what I’m going to see. But I’m also feel I’m drowning in politics when I visit GD, for example.

I’m sitting on the fence over this at the moment.

Rather than just a sports forum, you could almost split the Game Room into three based on thread subject: Sports, Video Games, and Parlor Games. They all fall under the description of “games”, but that’s where the similarities end, and it’s weird to seem them all mashed together.

That’s probably an even more drastic change than you wanted to hear (especially since the sports forum idea is presumably nothing new), but I did want to get the idea out there since there’s a world of difference between “What’s your take on the upcoming Fallout 3?” and “Post a movie title that starts with the next consecutive letter of the alphabet”.

Political forum.

Nitpick.

It’s forums not fora Just as in colloquiums, albums, rectums, etc. (OED desn’t even list fora as an alternative).

I guess I am one of the exceptions that makes full use of the Game Room. I think this forum has good flow of threads, it is easy to find the current threads by the second page and it is very well moderated so far. It is busy but not too busy. I would not object to seeing them split, but it seems like the forum works perfectly as long as people don’t mind looking at the second page of threads.

I know I was one of the dopers who begged for the Sports forum the longest and the Sports and Games once **Frank **mentioned the possibility. I have been very happy with it and I guess I would not want to see any more forums unless it was to split some non-media related stuff out of The Café. It seems like cooking and hobbies and craft work might make a good separate forum. However the new Barnhouse forum will probably pull in woodworking I would guess.
Not quite what you were asking for, but if the SDMB is taking some requests, can we push for getting the groups turns on when the main problems are resolved and can we increase the storage for PMs. 50 fills up very quickly I have found.

I never knew that. Ignorance fought.

Curses rain down upon whichever mod introduced me to that spelling.

If we moved the politics out of GD, what would be left?

Seconded. Although right now I think the forum would only need to be split twice into “Parlor Games” and “Sports and Video Games”.

I love the Feud threads, but they and the Mafia games really drown out the rest of the discussion.

It was a thread topic a while ago, fora/forum and I forget which one won the fight.

What Exit the fight against new forums was always getting less content per forum area was a bad thing right? Now with all the new, and old back I think we will get busy enough a lot of people will be pissed when the thread stays in a busy forum for 5 minutes. Or something, hell I just want one place for politics, not just debates but ass licking political threads the works belong in it. Right now you have spin-offs of politics in almost every area in the forum.

Oh, and while we’re discussing The Game Room again. I’ve noticed the mods have left a few video game threads in Cafe Society even after I reported them.

I thought that was strange.

I’ve just been Googling forums/fora, and there doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer. I do prefer forums, though: it just sounds better.

I can’t speak for Great Debates, since I seldom go there, but I would like to see a separate forum, or perhaps a sub-forum, to get all the political discussions out of The Pit. I’m tired of having to move past (or mouse over thread titles) of all the people complaining about Bush, or discussing Palin’s background, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

re-nitpick:

Forum Definition & Meaning | Dictionary.com (citing Random House and American Heritage dictionaries).

That is true, if and when traffic increases, the need for splitting forums might seem greater to me. I am judging it what I have seen under the P2P model.

I won’t be upset if Sports got split out to its own forum, hell it was what I originally wanted. I just didn’t think currently it was justified, but maybe it will be in the upcoming months. Let’s hope so.

Jim

I’d like to see the Knife Fight forum that was mentioned in the Lost Weekend thread in the pit.

Yes, my nitpick was overhasty. Fora is out there, and, while not listed in OED, it is listed as an alternative in other dictionaries, as Gfactor pointed out.

Your shame is unjustified, Marley23, pass the sackcloth and ashes over here!

Okay, I’m penciling in a suggestion for a grammar forum.

For the record I think both these options stink. “Forums” sounds wrong to me, and “fora” sounds pretentious.

Yous want to see has to be wrong though? I am piss poor in grammar and spelling but yous just is weird but is it wrong?
